How long did the K1 process take for you?

Hi everyone! I'm the USC petitioner. Looking for an idea of how long the K1 process took for India filers. I just mailed our petition last week and the idea of having to wait 6+ months to be with my fiance when we've already been apart for more than a year (with only 2 visits) is killing me. What was the average time for most of you? I'm seriously contemplating just moving there and dealing with the daunting task of us trying to move back to the states together in a couple of years, but if there's hope that this whole process can take less than 6 months then I know I should probably just hold out and keep waiting. I realize most people think that it would be crazy for me to quit a really good job in the US to move to India where I don't think I will even be allowed to work until we are married at least two years and I can get a POI (??) card, but I can't stand being away from him. Not to mention I would be out the $500 fee for filing the i-129f. Argh! Looking for some encouragement I guess :(

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered "Man.... Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."

Every case varies really. Countries don't necessarily have anything specific to do with the USCIS and NVC phase. At the embassy level that is where the time can take. Depends if can get medical done quickly and interview scheduled(or embassy sets you an interview quickly, depending on how India itself works). Then there's AP, which always can vary for a multitude of reasons. I think anyone reasonably would expect anywhere from 6 months on a good day, 8+ months on a bad one.

6 months is really fast when it comes to immigration.

You should instead use the time to prepare for next steps both in the process but also once your fiancé arrive.

Suddenly you guys will be busy with medical and preparation for the interview and for the big move. It's good for your fiancé to have this time in home country because the us is very different.

Yes you can move there if you want to and you can do a CR-1/IR-1 visa after marriage and living there. You will then have to prove that you will be locating back to the us to live.

Honestly 6 months is nothing. For me it really went SO fast with dealing with immigration and the whole move there are a lot of stuff to do all of the sudden. So even if you miss him then bite the bullet maybe go visit.

Waiting it out (6 months for a K1 / 12 months for a CR1) without your fiance/spouse is not a complete negative. Having patience is a huge factor in the success of a long term relationship or marriage. Having to show 6, 12, 18 or more months of patience up front is like riding with training wheels for when your real relationships starts.

Marriage: 2014-02-23 - Colombia    ROC interview/completed: 2018-08-16 - Albuquerque

Ah yes, that's a good point. We met in 2014 though, so we have been already waiting patiently for what feels like an eternity! But I know this will only make us stronger and I suppose I just answered my own issue...if we've already waited this long, then another 6-8 months should be nothing.

It took us ~4 months. And during the whole process I just couldn't bloody wait to move to America so we could be together...Now I realize that there are things I should have done, things I could have gotten with me...So that time, even though it might not at all feel like it, is SUPER important. Something that helped my transition in America a little easier was that 1-2 weeks before I came out, my husband bought me snacks I loved that we had back in Sweden, and made the place a little more comfortable. It helps tremendously. At least it did for me.

Good luck on your journey! It'll be over before you know it!

Take the wait this way.. new couples have the potential to disagree and fight more often while living together, vs when apart, everyone tries to be lovey dovey long distance. Waiting for immigration could be a learning experience that strengthens bonds.

Our NOA1 was on 28/11/2016

NOA2 0303/2017

We are "Ready" for an interview as of 03/28/2017

Process is a bit slow after you get NOA1 until NOA2. Post that its a breeze.

Hang in there!!! You have picked the best possible route.

It took me almost one year from filing and entering US on K1 visa and I know many people here who have waited for more than 2 years. So, stop worrying about the time. You will eventually get there.Indian consulates are little tough on immigrants so pay attention to your red flags if you have any.And prepare for the next step.6 months is nothing for Indian applicants.

Ok, thanks so much for your response. I understand 6 months is nothing, I'm just so anxious for us to be together. Kind of wishing we would've just stuck to our original plan of me moving there and then later go the route of spousal visa, but I guess at this point it's too late since we've already filed the K1 and have no choice but to wait it out and be patient. Thanks again, appreciate your inputs.
