Right off the bat, thank you to everyone here providing help and insight to those immigrating!

I'm a Canadian with a K1 visa issued on the 28th of February and have now moved to Boston to marry my finance as of March 10th, and couldn't be happier!
Our wedding court date is set for the first week of April!

I confused as to what the next steps are, if any, before the wedding. Please correct me if I'm wrong or point me in the right direction.

-Should I apply for a SSN right away or after the wedding? This seems to be pretty straight forward process at one of their offices. It seems as if I just need the electronic I-94 form printed as well as application form and my passport with visa. Do I check off the box that says I am eligble for work? I don't believe I am as I need an EAD.

After the wedding - it seems the best way to be able to work is apply for an Category C9 EAD as well as the Advance Parole together for free, when applying for Adjustment of Status. I believe this EAD/AP will allow me to work and/or travel while the Adjustment of Status is pending. To do this, I believe I need the i-485 and the following questions:

  • Copy of your government issued photo identification (Canadian drivers license?)
  • Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, if applicable (I believe only the vaccination record is needed as medical was already done)
  • Form I-864, Affidavit of Support (Do I just include the same copy that was submitted with my K1?)
  • Copies of any other approved application or waiver you have had in relation with your application for K status (Approved Form I-129F, Form I-601, Application for Waiver of Excludability, etc.) Is it okay to include everything I have with me?

The online world is both confusing and helpful, so thanks again to everyone chipping in. Sorry for the long winded question, however just wanted to be as clear as possible!

TIA

Get the SSN asap, many people have issues getting it after marriage and/or too close to the i-94 expiration date and have to wait until they receive their EAD. I recommend applying for the SSN about 2-4 days after POE.

And just like you did with the K-1 you follow the guides here on VJ through the rest of the process, obviously using the example forms and checklists.
