Hi everyone,

Has anyone traveled to Canada since the eTA program was launched? My conditional GC has expired and I have the I-797 extension letter. I can't seem to find any information on Canadian immigration website if I can apply for eTA using the GC extension letter or do I need to apply for a visitor visa. I need to travel to Canada soon for work...Does anyone have experience with this situation?

We travelled to Canada by car with the I-797 and expired Green Card.  We didn't officially need an eTA, but we got one anyway.  We had no issues getting the eTA or crossing the border.

Sukie - thanks for your response, that's good to hear. So, when you applied for eTA did you mention the expiry date of your green card as 1 year plus the expiry mentioned on your card? Eg. if my card says 3/1/2017, should I mention the expiration has 3/1/2018 in the eTA application?

Yes, 3/1/2018.. because the letter effectively overrides the card's expiration date, extending LPR status until date notated on the letter.

Thank you! The letter does not mention an exact date but just says that the status is extended by 1 year. So, I will use the date on my green card and 1 year to it.

Not quite the same, but that's what we did when my wife applied for Global Entry: we just entered 2017 instead of 2016 for her GC expiration date, and it went through the system fine.

Did you have any problem when you traveled?  I am in the same situation.  Did you end up changing the date on eTA form?

My trip got cancelled.

I did apply for eTA by changing the date and got approved within a few minutes. But that just seems to be system generated and not proof for anything.

Everyone above has had positive experiences so that's encouraging.

That's a personal decision but I don't think you are writing anything incorrect by changing the date. Your green card is extended by 1 year for which you have the I-797 document to show. The Canadian immigration website does not address this situation and I had even tried emailing the Canadian consulate but haven't received a reply. So, if at all an officer were to question me, I'd explain all this and expect that it'd be sufficient to prove that there was no intention to lie.

So to enter 🇨🇦, bring:

1. Passport

2. ETA

3. Expired green card

4. Extension letter

Am I missing anything?
