Doesn't matter the engagement, you say it in your letter of intent, you plan to get married, many people marry with no previous official engagement with the ring and all, Do not worry, you show your face to face time all evidence you met, you have a real relationship and you good to apply for fiance visa. The K1 visa names a fiance, it's the document which kinda makes you engaged to marry and of course, you always can come and change your mind not marrying, nobody force you to marry here

a formal engagement party can hurt you for some cultures if you perform some of the marriage traditions. you can get into a limbo state of too married for fiance visa and not married enough for spousal visa.

 

to get the fiance visa all that needs to happen is

person a: person b will you merry me?

person b: Yes I will merry you.

 

then have both persons sign forms stating that they will comply by the terms of the visa and will merry each other within 90 days of entry to the us. note that both persons may not have married each other before they entered the us or else you will have to start over with the spousal visa.

What is an engagement ? ( For petitioning purposes)

To have agreed to marry 90 days after POE.
No party needed (country and embassy specific though)

No ring needed.

 

Have you had a 5 min discussion that you want to be married within 90 days ?

If no then discuss now. If yes you are good to go.

This was a confusion for us too since proposing with an engagement ring and/or engagement parties is more of an adopted culture in PH, but not really our tradition. We don't have an engagement ring too and I wondered if that would be a problem later during the interview. And I completely understand everyone's response. This thread has been helpful. Thank you!

You will get a better answer if you post in your regional forum as to what the embassy expects in regards to

cultural engagement celebrations. In some countries they hinder because they are viewed as 'being traditionally married'

and therefore too married for a K1. As to the PI I don't think either matters but make sure from other PI members.

A lot of people here are saying that a formal engagement or a wedding ring is not necessary; that you just need to marry within 90 days of entering the US/provide the letter of intent. However, if that is the case, then why is it that one of the questions COs always ask during the interview is "when did you propose?"

What CO is really asking is "when did he ask you to marry him"?  Yes, a formal engagement/wedding ring is not necessary for a marriage proposal.  For fiancée visa purposes, you must get married within 90 days of entering the USA on a K-1 visa.  The letter of intent is submitted during the K-1 process is telling the government you are planning to get married.

A proposal does not mean a ring or celebration. It is the moment when one asks the other do you want to marry me

or when both arrive at that conclusion in a discussion. It can be as simple as one saying to the other : When we are married we
should do this or that and the other agrees. It does not have to be a traditional going down on one knee with ring in hand

asking will you marry me while a symphony plays in the background. CO's ask that question because many do the traditional proposals
and they want to know when did the relationship take a serious turn, also knowing that not all follow that pattern.
