Hi,

Anyone here living in Katy, Texas? Just have some few questions before I move in. ^_^ I hope you can help me.

1. Can you give me an idea if it's easy to find a job there for college graduate with not much experience?

2. What is the cheapest price for a room/house rent?

3. How much is the average salary?

4. Where do/can you leave your child while you work?

5. Can we survive with a minimum wage job in Texas? :D

Thanks so much~!

I have only driven through Katy, but if you look at the following URL you'll not only see a lot of information about Katy (including answers to many of your questions), but you can also find forums/message boards with more qualitative feedback (and lots of unfounded opinions, if I had to guess).

Good luck.

Katy is a western suburb of Houston, so there are many opportunities around the area.

The traffic on Interstate 10 can be brutal, if you're commuting into/out of Houston daily.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I lived in Houston for 25 years. Katy is a suburb in Houston.

1. Yes, the great thing about this city  is that you have plenty of job opportunities.

2. If it's a one bedroom apartment then 500 or so is cheapest. For a house it depends if you're getting from owner or realtor.

3. Average per hour is 8.50

4. If you have no friends or relatives then a daycare.

5. Yes. I worked with 9 dollars an hour and had my own place at some point. Good luck!

Minimum wage is 7.25 in Texas with no intentions of going up. On minimum wage it can be hard to live But most places pay more, I work at HEB and even the baggers start at 9$ an hour, I currently make 11$ an hour and my husband makes 12$ an hour.

Minimum wage is 7.25 however most places (at least from what I have seen, start at 8 or 8.50 since not many people work for 7.50 anymore) I worked at Cricket (cellphone company) For $9 an hour. 7.25 is very rare now. At least from what I experienced. Going from $9 and up, you can get by. It'll be difficult but it can get someone by regardless.

I live in Katy.. Born and raised :)

1. It is easy to find employment, especially going more towards Houston. Depends on your diploma, but we have some oil & gas companies along the energy corridor and downtown. Lots of businesses to apply to. I would try looking at Glassdoor.com, indeed.com etc.

2. Depends on where you want to live and how nice of a place you want. Generally nice apartments are going around 1000 a month, same as renting or buying a house. The cheaper apartments are usually a lot older, run down and may be in bad areas.

3. Depends on the career field.

4. Daycare. We even have Montessori schools you can put them in, however, the monthly fees are going to be a lot like your rent.

5. I'm sure you could survive off of minimum wage if you don't expect too much. I make way more than minimum wage, but don't want to live in a run down apartment so I live with my sister. Rent is high in Katy and I like to have food on the table, internet to use and cable to watch; but maybe my expectations of living are too high. or I'm too high maintenance when it comes to living standards...
