Hello,

I've tried to find a topic similar to this one but did not,

My husband is about to file form N400 based on marriage

I did gather all the documents required on the checklist, my question is am I supposed

to send those in with the N400 form or have them at the time of the interview?

Also I have read about the passport photos that he is supposed to write his name on them, is it true?

I remember when I had my Interview back in 2005 they had me write the name on the photos at the time of the interview.

Thank you in advance and Good Luck everyone..

Here is what I replied to a similar question a few days ago - In general if applying at 3 yrs , the documentation to be sent with the application is more complex. I don't know about the photos , but it cannot hurt to send them in if he has them, or make sure he brings them to the interview, your choice.

1. One check for $725, in the reference section of the check write down your A# and what the check is for : Naturalization & Biometrics fees

2. Full package should be sent to the same address, based on your state of residence , send it with second day delivery and signature USPS Priority - it cost me $23, well worth the price, delivered 2nd day by noon.

3. If filing under 3 years rule, it is your burden of proof, which means you have to prove that the marriage is bona fide -So yes, you will need to send evidence of that .

In addition to the documents required in the instructions, you may want to add:

-  documents showing joint financial responsibility ( mortgage contract showing both names, tax transcripts, bank statements, credit cards, car loans,  heath insurance cards, 401K beneficiary info showing both spouses, car insurance policy listing both spouses, etc) ,

-  documents showing joint social life ( birth certificates of children, emergency contact information from work listing other spouse, or from school, listing other spouse as authorized to communicate with school, any joint memberships, evidence of trips taken together, family events etc) -

That being said, the package should be cleanly organized and structured, so that it does not overwhelm the reviewer.

* A coversheet, listing content in order of attachments helps to make sure nothing you said you sent had been lost.

* You may want to list evidence per the above separation - financial and social -

* Attach the check at the front so they see it right away.

* Put your A# on all pieces of paper you send in.

Hope this helps -

Also, what is missing above is evidence of divorce from prior spouse if applicable and certificate of marriage to you .These are mentioned on the checklist as well and have to be sent in with the application.

Yes it asks for 2 passport photos, color on a white background.  It even explain to you in detail the size of the face, the distance to the top of the photo, what to wear, not to smile, etc.  Then it states to write your name preferably in pencil with name, dob and alien number on the back of the photo.  I used a felt pen, but try not to use a ballpoint that will make marks.  If you take you own photos and then use a free software, you can create very cheap passport photos that are better quality than the ones you buy at Walgreens.

Wait, according to the checklist, dont you only need photos, if you reside outside US?

Yes, thats correct but I sent them anyway. I checked with a few offices that deal with these  kind of paperwork all the time and told me doesn't hurt to send them. Just sent everything last night. They should receive it Thurs.

I had forgotten how stressful this process is ?

In the back of the photo write full name, alien number and date of birth.  Use pencil, or maybe felt pen but not ballpen that could make a mark on the photo. You send all the pertinent documents with the i-400 application and keep a copy for the interview.
