How does one not have enough income to qualify for Obama care. I thought the less income you had the cheaper it was ?

Certainly happens, does depend where you live, nothing logical about O Care.

Many states have a lower income level under which you are not qualified for Obama care... and as immigrants, you can't get Medicaid for 5 years... so you can get nothing....  and if you are over 65 then you can't get Medicare for 5 years, nor can non market place policies be sold to anyone over 65... you are stuck...

Actually some places you can as a new immigrant, CA and NY comes to mind, like I say it is complicated, Medicare you may have to buy into after 5 years, so OCare seems better?

The Donald was very, very, very clear. He had a replacement plan. Really the very best, hugely goodest, so so very good plan. The people would love it. Cheaper premiums. Better access to care. Awesome. Fantastic. Historically it would go down as the greatest thing anyone has ever seen.

Not surprisingly the so called president never had any such plan. It usually takes a bad President a few years to show themselves as such. Not seeing so much winning, except at losing, guess that's just another broken promise from the carnival huckster in chief.

That's what his supporters and fans seem to forget. During the campaign, he promised to repeal and replace Obamacare on day 1, because he has all the answers, and he knew what had to be done.

Of course, the rest of us knew he has no such plan, and he was blowing up smoke.

As it would be expected, and understandable, there will be no consequences of yet another one of his big lies. The king continues to be naked, and the MDRs are so enamored with him, they can't see what a fraud Trump is.

And real progress began when the MDRs bought the bridges he was selling them. In some way I feel sorry for the millions that will sooner or later realize they were duped by the Donald.

VT  as well, GC will get you medicaid. Also, very generous subsidies for the ACA plans for those with lower incomes. Good or bad is in the eye of the beholder and the payer.

Ahhh ok. Well I learned something.  So if you are really in need of Obamacare you can't get it.  We need a viable 3rd party

Logical? Did you hear about the work requirements for Medicaid, that Republicans wanted to include in the now failed Republican health care "reform" bill? This from a party who that likes to claim to be to driven by the christian faith.

Yes.. there is a gap, not a huge one, for people like us, but a very costly one for sure...  probably the most frightening issue for us as mature age immigrants ... we  are figuring that we will need upwards of $50,000 out of pocket for the 2 years that we will be self funding health premiums, before our insurance starts to pay out.  And if pre existing condition coverage is  no longer made a requirement, we are cactus.

The obvious solution would be to expand Medicare eligibility, and require immigrants to have had health insurance, prior to immigrating here in the first place.

I have no doubt, why do you think otherwise?, I was talking about OCare.

Not quite sure how "requiring immigrants to have health insurance  before they come here" makes any difference or impact on having insurance in the USA? Each country runs its own health system its own way and how I was covered in Australia has no bearing on being covered here.  We were aware of what we were going to face under the US system and made the decision to live here with that impact anyway.

What exactly are you complaining about then?

Plenty of other anti-Trump threads; let's please focus this one on the stated topic.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

This is not a solution. Most immigrants have nonexisting or free health care systems in their home countries, and once they immigrate they cannot rely on it from home (the UK is even making it harder for those to use it when they return). Look, like it or lump it.. how exactly would you require or enforce an immigrant to have health insurance prior to immigration? You should know how the insurance system works and the daily threads on this very forum of immigrants who are routinely prevented, given false information, or denied insurance simply because of bad employees, a lack of an SSN (which isn't even an appropriate reason), or complete lack of a system that informs the general public what insurance services are available to them. It frustrates me to no end. No American Citizens are required or forced to purchase insurance, and neither are immigrants for that matter. That's why many choose to pay the penalty instead of the outrageous premiums... to you know, be able to eat, have heating, and a roof over their head. There's no insurance provider who will sell to an immigrant overseas that's immigrating that will be covered under the standards of the ACA. They have to actually be living here first, or have some spousal status (in some exceptions I've seen). And that's just privately purchased plans, because O'care itself has requirements that absolutely demand the immigrant be living here and have filed or obtained paperwork (that is ever increasingly being delayed on the part of the USCIS) to get it. Short term, immigrant travel plans, and scammy type plans won't protect them and are substandard. That's for all immigrants, and for the elderly and those in unique situations caught in a 'gap period' it is nearly impossible. There's no protections or smart legislation to protect anyone.

I was able to get my wife a policy tailored for immigrants as soon as she got here , until I could add her to mine. When I stopped working I was going to buy her a catastrophic policy and I was going to try and us the VA. Obamacare ruined that option.

Obama care is a a disaster. Whatever that thing the pubs came up with was as big a joke.

What we need to do next is vote every pub and den out of office

That's what most people do of course, and it's great you were there to help her and sign her up to a temp plan before you added her to yours. It's amazing how many couples just don't know they can get an SSN asap or go by what HR tells them, or that they can even add them to their health insurance policies (or buy their own). My pet peeve though is just how many people don't seemingly know their fiancés and spouses are eligible for health insurance. But when you get to an elderly immigrant things become even more complex, and there's really no guideline in place to help them. And there's been a lot of talk about ''essential health benefits'' this week, and yeah I get it, those are important. But we pretty much shelved quality or quantity. Yes, we might all have essential benefits under these plans, but the premiums are so high and the deductibles so ridiculous, when exactly can we use them with confidence? My mom has injured herself really badly in a fall last week and based on the scans she's going to need major surgery and go to a rehabilitation facility afterwards. She's scared Medicare won't cover it like they did her cancer treatment. I think that they certainly will - but can you imagine how it would be for an elderly immigrant that has no access to insurance? We acknowledge the fact their sponsors are supposed to financially provide, but if there's no options to obtain insurance for them, how can they do so properly?

So yes I'd agree what the GOP came up with was a laughable joke that they should be ashamed of. I don't think that O'care is the answer either (even though there are some aspects most people do like about it even if there are consequences to the things they like). But you know very well before O'care there were problems too. How exactly do we solve that? They've all had years...
