So how bad of a problem is this mistake I made in 2014?

Got my IRS Transcript from 2014, and I see that my wonderful tax software for that year put me in as SINGLE.

I been married since 2012. Was about to submit AOS for my wife. 

I filled out a form 1040X to ammend my taxes, and I am about to send it in, but my taxes were zero, since I lived overseas, had no income. 

Will this still be a issue? At this point, the mistake was made 3 years ago.

If you amended the taxes to correct the mistake and it has been resolved then should be no issue.

 

Amendments get made all the time to taxes for multiple reasons.

if you were married at the end of 2014 it will be an issue. simply file an amended return and include a copy of the irs transcript as well as you amended return. I am suggesting including both to show you did file taxes and paid what was required and then to show you are correcting the mistake that you found.

Would sending a copy of the 1040X I submitted - even though it says it takes 8 weeks to possibly take effect...   appease the gods at NVC?

It's fine to send it in as is.  The NVC's sole job is to make sure you've submitted all the required evidence.  They're not actually adjudicating the evidence.  They're just ticking the box that says the document is present.  As long as it gets corrected before the interview you shouldn't have any problems.

 Thanks so much for this information, many sleepless nights doing this AOS. wondering what questions they will have. Since I needed to explain my taxes anyway, I took responsibility for the mistake and showed that I am taking corrective action.  All has been submitted, and now we wait.
