Calling from the States to Australia

I noticed several posts about phone calling cards & prices, so I thought I would chime in with my experiece.

I use AT&T's plan (I think it's called "One Country") which allows me to make unlimited direct-dialed calls to Australia for $50 per month. The quality of the connection is far superior the calling cards I tried (espcially because I'm calling rural Australia) and it works out to a little over 1 cent per minute for us.

I wish there was another method other than calling cards to Cambodia that is inexpensive. I searched on Google with no availability.

There is a better option like using your broadband internet service to make telephone calls, known as VOIP.

You can sign up with companies which offer this service in Australia like http://gotalk.com.au . Not only can you call anyone there for a un-timed local call but you also get a local aussie number. This means that anyone in Australia can call u for the cost of a local call, even though this VOIP device may be located in the US.

Otherwise there are various similar VOIP companies like http://www.sunrocket.com which provide plans that allow unlimited calls within the US as well as unlimited calls to Australia and other countries..

If you have broadband on both sides, nothing beats using direct computer to computer voice over ip with any of the IM clients. Its generally free and if your connection is fast enough, quality can be better than a phone call.

There are several different POTS to VOIP services. Some plans offer direct unlimited calling to certain countries others allow you to get a phone number in other countries for a small monthly fee, making it a local call to call the US.

Check these guys out: https://www.lingo.com/ For about $22 per month, you can get unlimited calling to 21 countries including Australia. For another $10 per month, you can get an Australian number.
