I unknowingly voted in federal election without knowing its illegal. Anybody know what is the first thing I should do that can help me when I apply for citizenship ? other than getting immigration attorney ?

I know it was a really big mistake since I just found out thats its illegal.

Advice will be appreciated. Thanks

first thing is get unregistered to vote. citizenship might never be an option for you now as you have made a claim to false claim to citizenship. you may get by in the is if you never apply for citizenship but when you do they ask the questions that you have to answer truthfuly.

lady did the same thing as you and ends up in removal proceedings when she applied for citizenship.

I'm sorry

Removal proceedings as in you will get deported (as in removed from the US).

First things first... did you actually VOTE? Are did you simply REGISTER to VOTE?

I dont remember I registered to vote but somehow I got the voting ID card in the mail so I assumed I was able to vote. SADLY I did vote. I don't know what to do now. I honestly want to come clean at this time. I moved here in 2013 never have any criminal records. Im jus trying to live a new life.

when was it?

if it was before September 30, 1996 there is more hope.

https://www.uscis.gov/policymanual/Print/PolicyManual-Volume8-PartK.html

there is a waver it is not usually approved but it exists.

from an immigration standpoint you best friend is time. the more time since this event you can show you lived by the law the better. I would prepare but not submit the waver until 20 years or removal proceedings have started.

FYI this is a forum that immigration knows about. and I do not know how this server works but most keeps logs of what I address posts what. they can then link your ip address to a physical address and a physical address to a name since lpr are supposed to register thier homes. they can then check if that name has been used in a election and they have you. this is the scary side of what technology can do.

Pardon me...  yea this is bad...

You don't seem sure that you actually voted though.. I don't understand why you would register to vote though.. every country, and I am sure your home country requires years and a process before one is allowed to vote.. america isnt the only country with a procedure

It sucks that you will have to face the harsh reality/ consequences of this... this is an offence everywhere.. and like someone said previously especially with this administration in power here... I mean it would be the same with either party, really...

do you think I should consult with the attorney first before deregister my name ?

You should remove your name regardless. But, yes, feel free to consult attorneys.

Yes, this is a very serious issue. I'm really not sure what would lead somebody to believe voting in a federal election as a non-citizen was being permitted, voting card or not.

I would also suggest seeking an attorney, but I'm not sure what they can really do.

Yes, it would be best to unregister.

Not all. New Zealand allows Permanent residents to vote. In fact you must be on the electoral roll there.

But alas, we are not in NZ, we are in the USA, and that is a different story. Unregister, and do not apply for naturalization.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

really?

That's crazy...

then maybe the judge can rule in his or her favor  and be lenient based on negligence if he or she is from a country that allows residents to vote.
