Hey,

Does anyone know what documents I can use to get a California driving permit if I don't have my green card yet? I know it says I can use an NOA but is it only the one that tells you green card approved or can it be one which is proving you have applied for AOS therefore showing you are allowed to be here after I94 expires.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am still waiting on EAD and AP card, have GC interview on April 17th but really want to get on with practising driving on the other side of the road with my wife while I have all this spare time on my hands!

Ok thanks for your reply :) I have read everything on the CA website but it isn't fully clear. I think I may just book an appointment and bring all my NOA's so far and hope for the best!

I got mine in CA about 10yrs ago and it was really easy!!!!! U just need to bring your i94 i believe... remember, now CA gives driver license to everyone (although undocumented get a different one).  i remember when i got mine it didnt expire when my visa expired also! so i was able to renew it ect.

you do a written test.. do the practice ones online lol and then u have a year to come back and do ur driving test.. u can do the driving test the next day if u want to! make sure u know the roads around the place haha and i think a three point turn and parallel park.

Hey,

I got told that too but when I checked the website it says since some time in 2016 you need to prove your legal status and address. My I94 has expired because my admission was on a K1 visa but I have done everything legally and within the times required so I am still here legally I just don't have a specific proof of that other than all the NOA's to show I am working on my AOS

I hope the test isn't to hard, it seems impossible to get driving lessons any where as an adult, they are al for teens so I assume driving an automatic is somewhat easier than a manual! I just need to get used to being on the other side of the road, and... all these stop signs!

Thanks for your advice :)

make sure you know where your four way flashers are... i would go and pass the written then practice alot with your SO.  i guess bring your information and just see what they can give you lol u can always get the undocumented one and then switch to the regular one when u get your gc.  i wouldnt worry too much.  just practice driving around. remember the signals are on the other side too, majorly confused me when i drove overseas.  u can fail the written 4x in the same day before u have to go back and u can fail the driving and try again the net day..

In Cali they unfortunately want to see your EAD or GC, NOAs won't help. I researched a lot and looked into it, even called them. You would've been able to get a DL of your I-94 wasn't expired yet but it would've also only been valid until it's expiry date... so wasn't really worth getting it (at least for me).

Rules must have changed as mine never expired...i would get the written test for undocumented so u can drive and then when u get ur gc go back for the driving test;)
