Work Permit-How Easy is it really?

Hello Everyone,

 

For those of you who have a work permit (but are not yet a green card holders), how easy or difficult is the job search for you? I'm sure it all depends on your industry, level of education, command of English, etc...but in general, have you been finding resistance from potential employers based on your status?  Thank you so much!

No problem here. They just made sure I have the actual card to show them and I was good to go

Have to agree with above. We have yet to receive my partners work permit (still couple months off probably), and as you stated yourself, it can vary widely upon location, education, work experience, field of work, ect..

 

But so far my partner has a couple interested parties, one based on his degree and another more on his majority of work experience field; but of course he can't get too involved right now, he just had inquired about the work they did and they both still want him to get back to them as soon as he is able to work.

From a personal standpoint my husband found that employers seemed to have a misunderstanding or no understanding of what an EAD is (unless they were government employers), and whether it was just by some circumstance or coincidence, no one ultimately was interested in hiring him until he had a green card. I think though that this may be entirely dependent on the field of work involved, relevant experience, and the health of the job market in the particular state in general. Above all employers are looking for American experience, which means sometimes, unless it is a very specific field - a person may have to take a job below their ability and work their way up. One factor my husband's current employer liked was that he had prior training and experience working for an American-based company in his prior job. It's always important to tailor the resume to American standards, promote yourself in a way that is specific to the needs of the company hiring, and always make sure to note somewhere on your resume that you are work authorized.

We had no issues in two different jobs.
