Can I apply for ESTA while married to US citizen?

I am not an US citizen. I got married with my spouse, an US citizen, a year and half ago on my F1 visa in the US. Then I left the US for my home country a month after we got married without applying for any status change. 

 

We have been living separated since then, so our relationship is breaking, and we are thinking about getting divorced. 

 

Now I need to go to the US for a trip, can I still apply for ESTA program while being married to a US citizen? I am afraid that I may be treated to have the intent to stay in the US since my spouse is US citizen who lives in the US?

Yes you can. You still however have to demonstrate your non-immigrant intent to a CBP officer when seeking admission. Bring strong ties back home and you should be fine. People can still visit the U.S. even when married to a U.S citizen though it might increase your burden of proof when trying to convince a CBP officer. With strong ties back home you will be good.

12/14/2016: Mailed I-751.

12/19/2016: NOA issued.

01/26/2017: Biometrics.

05/03/2018: I-751 transfered to NBC.

02/27/2019: Joint I-751/N-400 Interview.

05/14/2019: I-751 APPROVED.

Naturalization:

12/02/2017: Mailed N 400 to Phoenix, AZ Lockbox. (I-751 still pending)

12/05/2017: Package delivered in Phoenix, AZ. Transferred to Harrisonburg Processing Center.

12/07/2017: Notice of action issued. (IOE)

12/26/2017: Biometrics.

01/23/2019: Interview Scheduled for 2/27/2019.

02/27/2019: Joint I-751/N-400 interview. N-400 recommended for approval.

05/16/2019: N-400 APPROVED! Placed in line for oath ceremony.

05/17/2019: Oath ceremony notice mailed.

06/12/2019: Swearing in Ceremony! Finally a U.S. citizen!

of course you can apply.

you will have to prove to cbp that you are going to return once your trip is over and having a husband in the us who is usc and having a marriage strained by the distance does not help.
