I understood , Charles :D

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

When I said there could be a test, I meant doing that rather than barring people because they didn't speak English. I don't think either is a good idea. Who knows, by 2050 we could have a choice of Spanish or English on naturalization tests... hmmm

By the way, when are you "immigrating" to New York? B)

They had me put in my top 3 choices of move-in dates, but I haven't gotten my housing assignment yet so I really have no idea. The last date would be August 10 I think. The earliest maybe July 27. I hope it's earlier because it gets me an excuse to not go to my friend's wedding.

Soon enough, with this time warp we're in.

My wife is learning English very well. I'm jealous because she presently knows a language that I wish I could understand. She speaks Thai, and Cambodian. I only understand one.

Hmm...Yes, of course! In order to be naturalized, it's essential to pick up English fluency (or, comprehensible English).

The only thing I have a problem with are all the illegal immigrants entering this country and able to get Government Benefits despite them being illegal.... WHY THE HELL should I have to pay for an illegal immigrant. It's called get off your rear and get a job!...The other thing I don't like is that the corporations are moving the jobs to poor countries for cheap labor.

If we have to go thru all of these procedures to ensure legal entry for our soon to be spouses/or current spouses... the LAW SHOULD APPLY TO EVERY immigrant...including illegals!

Besides the fact that your last paragraph makes no sense, do you realize that most illegal immigrants have a job? Their kids have jobs? They aren't on welfare. I mean, if you're going to make half-cocked arguments that aren't based in logic, get your facts straight.

I'm sorry if I offended you.. I know of several here that don't have jobs...but just keep getting pregnant... So No, I shouldn't of generalized and I should have been more cleares....HOWEVER...I don't know where you are from..but here in Ohio..and more so in the couNty that I'm in... it states on the Department of Job and Family Services website that even if they have entered the country illegally and still at that status...they can qualify for benefits. Thats where I'm having a problem. I work, I pay taxes.... I have to argue the fact that most aren't on welfare...I work for a bank..and ALOT come in to cash their welfare checks, yet have thousands in the bank, and qualify for full medical coverage thru Medicaid..(which the taxpayers foot the bill).I am fully aware that alot of the accounts were opened even with fake I.D.'s.(there's a place in Chicago that is well known for making them)...Why should I foot the bill of someone else when they are working.. or able to work. I'm having a MAJOR problem about those that enter this country illegally, start working, then think they should be given a pardon and be allowed to stay. As I said before..with those of us that ARE going thru the proper channels and abiding by the laws... it makes that a little more difficult to swallow. So as far as my last paragraph making no sense to you... I have to disagree. Those of us that are petitioning for a K1 visa or another type of visa are doing things legally. There are right and wrong ways of entering the United States. If they want to come to the US, fine...just do so LEGALLY by following the laws...and I won't have a problem... There are companies that will sponsor people from foreign countries to come live in the United States just to work if they are wanting to make a better life for themselves and their families..that I have no problem with.

  • 3 weeks later...
As long as the person is sponsored and isn't on welfare, I don't much care if all they do is chatter to their grandkids in Italian, y'know?

Hence the exemption for the elderly

Meh. People's brains lose the language plasticity much much earlier than legally elderly. I just figure that the best way to assimilate new immigrants is to ensure their kids are integrated. The older guys will just die off eventually. ;)

my hubby's mother ( 60+ yrs old) is learning english... she never bothered before... and she has no plans on emigrating... but she wants to be able to talk with me and with my daughter (both of us are trying to learn some dutch, but sadly enough, my hubby doesnt really speak it much here :( )

I bunched them together to get a feel for whether respondents feel there are too many 'foreigners' coming into the US or not. I suspected that may be a large part of anti-illegal-immigrant sentiment.

i think that this will only serve to 'prove' your point because you didnt separate... if someone feels that immigrants should follow legal pathways, then how could they vote that they think illegal/legal immigration should increase? frankly, its like something i would expect to find on FOX... and surprising from you, gupt

i am an example of how this issue is not just something that is democratic/republican... for most issues, i tend to follow the more democratic way of thinking... but, with this issue, i dont fall in line with the whole "bleeding heart" idea... i see it as a much more global picture... if i really care about all these people who are suffering the world over, why would i want to see them be here illegally and be exploited by businesses? i see this as something that hurts the illegal immigrant and the USC... i think that we should crack down on the businesses that want illegals here just to use them for cheap labor (thereby not giving the illegal immigrant a fair wage, and also cheating a USC out of a fair wage job)... but i also think that we should try more to encourage other countries to actually take care of their own citizens... why is it that other countries are just as happy to see their citizens flee to another country?

this country is a melting pot... i see it that way... i like it that way... one of the reasons i moved to the area that i live in now is because i wanted my child to see more... to be exposed to more of a variety of ethnicities and culture... to have a better chance at a world view than she would in the more secluded area we were living in... i welcome foreigners from all countries, religions, etc... i just want them to be here legally and safely, for themselves and USCs... have the criminal and health background checks... why is it so terrible to want all immigrants to be documented?

Interesting that the prevailing attitude seems to be "I don't want so many damn furriners here!" (see question 1) when this is a site for people who are TRYING TO BRING THOSE DAMN FURRINERS HERE.
