Not at all. this is I-485 through marriage with US citizen

Same thing happened here. Filed application for my wife. Rejected due to incorrect payment for i485. I had sent one cheque totalling $2170 ($535 for i130 + $1225 for i485 + $410 for i765). Did you figure out what was wrong?

When you file concurrently you need to write two checks, one for the i-130 and one for the i-485 and biometrics.

If you file for i-485 (and i-131 and i-765) you can send one single check. Those of us who arrived on a K-1 do this, for example.

But when you also file for i-130 that one needs a separate check.

Cool, I sent separate checks this time and left the i765 fee out since that’s apparently waived if filing with the i485. Total $1760.

For which form?  I did not see that on any of the instructions.  I see stuff about a biometrics appointment, but not about needing to pay a fee for that with the form.  Not arguing, just confused.

If you look here https://www.uscis.gov/i-485

If you scroll down a little, you can find under the section Filing fee a nice table with possible fees for the i-485

Thanks, we got it worked out.

I think this section is very badly written. We all have busy lives, for many in the process English is not the native language, and we don't need mindless bureaucrats obfuscating the process. The sentence "The filing fee for form I-485 is $1,140." is definitive. I shouldn't have to read any further. If there is a calculation that needs performed that should be introduced and then explained that there is a basic fee, a biometrics fee, and other fees as needed. If there is a table, then the sentence should say, "refer to the table below for the fees you will need to pay." Returning a payment without any explanation of what they expected is also incomprehensibly stupidly boneheaded f'ng nonsense. Sorry, as nice a person as I try to be most of the time, this type of intentionally unhelpful mindless drone people is one of the few things in life that rub me the wrong way.

Seems pretty clearly listed to me. Never stop reading partway through any immigration form or instructions...always read the full instructions.

From the I-485 instructions:

"Filing Fee.

Each application must be accompanied by the appropriate filing fee and biometric services fee (if applicable). (See the What Is the Filing Fee section of these Instructions.)"

...

"What Is the Filing Fee?

The filing fee for Form I-485 is $1,140. (don't stop reading here)

If you are 13 years of age or younger and:

1. Are filing with a parent’s Form I-485, the filing fee for Form I-485 is $750; or

2. Are filing without a parent’s Form I-485, the filing fee for Form I-485 is $1,140.

A biometric services fee of $85 is also required for applicants between 14 and 79 years of age.

If you are 79 years of age or older, you do not need to pay a biometric services fee. However, you still must appear for your scheduled biometrics collection appointment.

If you are 13 years of age or younger, you do not need to pay a biometric services fee. However, you still must appear for your scheduled biometrics collection appointment. If you turn 14 years of age while your application is pending, you will then have to pay an $85 biometric services fee before USCIS will adjudicate your application."
