Tax transcript and return

Ok, under the 5 year rule application, it needs 5 years of my tax transcript/return. I have 2013 to 2016 transcripts & sent a copy with my n-400. I have read some of the posts here that we can fill in a form to request for an old transcript but has to pay something. I still have a copy of my 2012 income tax return. Do you think I can just use the return for 2012 while the rest of the years are transcripts for the interview ?

You can make a request to IRS to get your last 5 years tax transcripts for free.  IRS will provide you two different type of transcript:

  1. Tax Return transcript
  2. Tax Account transcript

I do not know which ones USCIS will accept so I would get both to be on the safe side. While I did not provide copies of the 2012-2016 IRS transcripts with my N400, I brought both Tax Return and Tax Account transcripts with me to my N400 interview just in case but never been asked to show them to the IO.

Be aware that the Tax Account transcript is only available for the last 10 years ONLINE, only the last three years are available to mail.

I went online, signed up for an account with the IRS, they ask you to verify identity, pair your phone for dual authentication - I was able to download 2012-2016 info with no problems, return transcripts and account transcripts ( they have other stuff in there, but did not think it was relevant). To those I plan to add my regular H&R Block pdfs although it may be overkill - The IRS docs have all the info they may need, if paid in full, if anything due etc.....

All in all, the exercise probably took me one hour - to go online, sign up, download etc...

  • sending I130 05/16/2007
  • cheque is cashed on 06/11/2007
  • NOA1 in mail 06/13/2007 (who said 13 is badluck )
  • 07/30/2007 After no touches and no other signs we just got an email with the APPROVAL of I130....Thank God !....now what ?

  • 08/07/2007 Case received by NVC and case number assigned :))

  • 08/13/2007 DS3032 and AOS bill were generated

  • 08/14/2007 Emailed choice of agent ...i'm so curious when they will accept it...hopefully soon

  • 08/21/2007 DS3032 and AOS fee bill arive in mail

  • 08/27/2007 paid AOS fee bill
  • 8/28/2007 DS3032 choice of agent accepted
  • 9/3/2007 IV fee bill generated

I applied under the 5 year rule. I took 3 years of tax returns with me - 2013, 2014 and 2015 (my accountant still has 2016).

At the interview all I was asked for was my driving license, green card and passport.  I had a bag full of evidence and wasn't asked for any.
