I-864

Hi guys,

I am very much confused about what "proof of income" we'll need to send with the I-864. We'll have a sponsor (my husband) and a co-sponsor (his dad). I know what they both need to send their 6 most recent paystubs and their most recent tax return form (and the two previous ones if it'll help strengthen our case).

But what exactly is meant by "tax return form"? Do they mean the W-2 forms? Or what? I don't know much at all about US taxes, so please explain everything Thank you!!

we took to our interview w2's and tax transcript for 3 years...the tax transcript was what Robert actually filled out to file his taxes..eg 1040 form ...we also took the state tax returns too...anything pertaining to taxes we took to show he can support me in the States...

Thank you, but something confuses me, Kath.. You said you took the form that your husband actually filled out, right? Well, didn't he send that in? And the state tax returns, what are those?

We were planning on ordering tax transcripts from the IRS.. those are not the same as the W-2s, right?

They don't want the state income tax returns so don't even bother with those.

Many people keep copies of their Federal income tax return. If your husband did not, they he will need to order transcripts.

The instructions for the I864 state that if transcripts are used, the 'attachments' - W2's and the like - are not required. But it wouldn't hurt to send them in if you can locate them as there is some evidence of RFE's without them.

my husband does online tax filing so he makes copies of the tax returns he files...

if your looking at getting copies of tax transcripts you can order them here it costs $29.95 but you will get them within a day delivered to your email address..

I had my W2's and sent them in a little extra will never hurt. If he had someone do his taxes they will also have copies. I got copies from my tax man for free.

I file my taxes online but before I hit the e-file button I print the forms, attach them to my W-2s and then file them away.

Jasmin, most people here in the States will file federal and state taxes which are two separate forms. Nevada residents for example do not file state taxes, only federal. The forms each person uses to fill out the tax info from the W-2 (which is sent out by the employer) is what the transcript is, some people use form 1040, others use 1040EZ, etc. That's what the IRS will be sending your husband when he sends in his request.

Thank you all so much for explaining. Unfortunately I am still a little confused because my husband said that he didn't get any letter/form/whatever when he got the check for the money he gets back.. Strange. He's got his W-2s. I think we'll have just to order tax transcripts from the IRS, which I believe are free also. We still got some time so we won't worry about using an overnight service.
