Hello,

My wife now qualifies for citizenship through marriage, however, I am not sure when to begin the process. I have all of the documents ready to go, but we have trips planned to leave the country in August and October. It is my understanding that when you are sworn in that you turn in your green card and then must apply for a passport. I am wondering when to send the N400 package. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You could always ask them to re-schedule both the interview and the oath. I wouldn't delay the application if everything is ready to go. Depending on where you guys live there is chance you could be done with everything before your August trip but also there is chance you won't even get an interview before your October trip. Have you guys checked how long on average the process takes at your field office?

Is it possible to reschedule the interview and the oath? How is that done?

You just contact them and get it rescheduled. I think it is not a problem to do it for the first time, the second time you should have really valid reasons why you want to reschedule it. My interview notice stated that it is important I keep my appointment, if i cannot make it I should contact them or fill out the section that was provided in the receipt for explanation with the words "I cannot keep my appointment because.....then signature and date. I hope it helps.

what will be your field office? Google your field office at USCIS website, they usually have it how it is done.

For example Washington Field Office states this:

If you want to reschedule or postpone your interview, send a request to the following email address:

was.interviewreschedule@dhs.gov

You may also come into the office and drop off reschedule requests in the designated drop box, just inside the public entrance, during business hours (7:30AM to 3:30PM), Monday through Friday.

Your request must be received before the scheduled interview date and include your Alien Registration Number, which is written on the appointment notice. Your request must also include the reason(s) for the request to reschedule.

For all applicants, petitioners, beneficiaries, and any other individuals scheduled for an interview at the Washington Field Office, the first reschedule request for that particular application or petition (as requested by the applicant, petitioner, or attorney) will generally be granted.  The benefit of the first reschedule is limited to one per application or petition. Where the first reschedule request has already been granted, all future reschedule requests will require a showing of good cause.

I was checking the Pittsburgh field office website and could not find anything specific about rescheduling.

My wife is really interested in filing as soon as possible but maybe it would be best to wait til after both trips?

I am in Florida and I applied end of August and had biometrics beginning of October, then interview Feb 2 then oath feb. 9th.     Five months is the average but look at where you are and see what the average wait is.  I would guess you will be in the thick of things for the august trip but should be done by October.  I know how it is, who wants to wait to do it.  Just know that you will have to be happy with either asking for a reschedule, or possibly giving up your August trip.  If those don't work for you, perhaps file before your august trip.  You will still have to be available for biometrics approx. one month after you file.

I was anxious to file mine also and ended up not being able to attend a family wedding at the end of January! I  wasn't about to ask to reschedule.

Good luck, it will go fast whichever you decide!
