I'm the USC, a stay (work) at home mom. I write, so I can pretty much can live anywhere.

This may be a repetitive question and inquiry... nonetheless I will ask anyways.

My husband is an engineer and currently works in the telecommunications field in Egypt. He is career shifting to embedded systems/embedded software engineering, and is taking private diploma with an employee of Mentor Graphics (In Egypt). We've been updating his LinkedIn, updated his resume (American style), and he's been working on some side projects in C and C++.

What are his chances of successfully landing a job in the field of embedded systems/embedded software engineering without having actually worked professionally at a company? He's proficient in a few  programming languages, but I suppose he would still be considered entry level as he's never worked for a company in this field... Would like some advice, insight, and suggestions.

Thanks :)

you are in a great place to start looking

although there is an abundance of C and C+ programers and he does not have experience with a company, he can land a job

Stress he has skills in multiple languages on his resume / any company doing buisness ties ( le us say Dubai) would be happy to get him

remember we are now working in an international environment

I don't know too much about engineering, but I used indeed.com a lot - you can search jobs with keywords and locations and you can always broaden your location areas. I would have him start looking for jobs NOW even if he isn't in the US - he can use your address and can always use a web based phone or Skype to do a phone interview first if they offer him a phone interview.

If there are professional groups in that field they will often let you "join" their organizations and have jobshares throughout their websites - being part of a national association of your job they may help you look as well.

With the help of one of my friends here and that organization https://www.upwardlyglobal.org/

It's really good organization helping high skilled immigrants. And using there one page resume. It helped getting me calls. I added in my resume willing to relocate anywhere in USA. Use LinkedIn, dice , and indeed.com really good one too

Hope that helps.

Hey Ahmed & Amy,

Try using this website DICE. Most companies will get contractors to look for employees for IT field here in Georgia Atlanta.

Contact those contractors companies in IT, make sure they're not 3rd parties because as you know in the IT field, we often have middle man (contractors) and a recruitment company that might work with contractors to get the client(Company). Your salary will be deducted a lot more if you use them.

Other than using Dice website, since your husband is an engineer and has experience, try to contact Dimension Data in Egypt first. They're one of the world best IT contractors. They have a branch located in Alpharetta.

Here's some companies that you might want to look into their careers website. I've been listing down IT firms for quite sometime while driving around Georgia. This might help.

1) AT&T (Doraville)

2) FirstData (Atlanta)

3) NCR (Duluth but they're moving headquarters in Atlanta near Edgewood)

4) Dimension Data (Alpharetta)

5) SAP America (Atlanta)

6) Infor (Atlanta)

7) Microsoft (Alpharetta)

8) Cisco (Lawrenceville) - They're new in Georgia

9) Veristor (Duluth)

10) Charter Global (Atlanta)

11) Abacus (Atlanta)
12) ADP (Alpharetta)

13) Landis+Gyr (Alpharetta)

14) Cox Communications (Alpharetta)

15) HP (Alpharetta)

16)IBM (Alpharetta)

17) Comcast (Alpharetta)

18) T-Mobile

19) Sprint

20) LexisNexis (Alpharetta)

And many more..

When you have no US experience the first priority is to actually get a job. Maybe it is really easy to get a job in IT, I wouldn't know :) , but many larger companies in my field will hire you as contractor for the first 3-6 months and then hire you on once they see that you are doing well and fitting in. That way the middle man gets payed and the worker gets a job and the client gets a good candidate. Yes your salary will be lower for those months,  but I consider it sort of paying ones dues.

The recruiter/staffing agency also have already established connections at the big companies.

Anyhow, maybe IT is different, just wanted to mention that there's more to recruiting agencies when you are brand new :)

Good luck to OP's husband in his search!

In IT industry, some companies will engage with a system integrator[IT recruiter/services that has clients(companies) directly] and system integrator sometimes might engage a recruitment agency(Middle man) > to get the recruiters scout for the employees. That is what I was trying to say but Suss&Camm is exactly right about everything above though. Just need to be careful when a recruiter calls and make sure they're system integrator OR a recruiter that direct hires from client(company) because you are getting deducted twice in your salary.

For example: Coca Cola engaged HP to look for a group of software engineers, HP hence engaged Robert Half Tech to look for you. So you are getting paid under Robert Half and they already deducted a certain amount from HP.

That's what I was trying to explain, apologies if I did not make it clear.

There is indeed not much choices to pick as a new immigrant, it really depends on how well ur husband's engineering experience! IT and Property industry is blooming now in Georgia, but gotta keep in mind that we are fighting for jobs with Georgia Tech and UGA US citizen grads and foreigner grads :(

So true, I'm currently in Austin and talked with a recruiter on Monday and went into the office for a "face to face". It's a tier 2  data center tech (night shift) role that she wants to place me in but it's $17 an hour during the 6 month contract period but I'll get my teeth and do it if offered. In addition she wants to set me up with a tier 1 role in Cisco that looks interesting but it's $17 an hour on a year to year contract. So the moral is you may be offered a lower salary initially but the important thing is you are getting that "US experience" they ask for, although to be honest IT is transferable to anywhere; a router in the Caribbean is the same as a router in Texas.
