:goofy: Hello all. Now that my husband finally got a job he wants to start sending some money over to his 17 year old daughter. He personally wants to send cash through the mail, though I have told him this is a risk because if is it lost or stolen its just too bad. We found out it would cost $45 just to transfer $, but we we want to send a little each month and that would eat up too much of it. We thought about buying her a Visa gift card but you can only use those in the US. We can't do traveller's checks because the same person has to sign them that buys them. He thinks writing a check from our US checking account would be too hard to cash over there for his daughter as she doesn't have a checking account. Any suggestions? :goofy:

he can send it western union. depending on how much he wants to send and how often it might also be an idea for him to get her a credit card and she can withdraw the money from a bank machine.

1. open another checking account in the US (a free one)

2. send the atm card to the daughter.

3. deposit what you want in the checking account.

tell her not to keep checking the balance (it cost $$ to check). Also, just tell her to take it out in one shot versus 5 pounds at a time.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

www.ikobo.com Sounds like what you're looking for. It works sooooo well... it only charges 11 dollars (or something like that) to deliver the card the first time. After that you can add up to 500 dollars a month and she can use any ATM machine to pick up the money... or she can use the card as a normal debit card in stores too. Try it out, I really love their service.

We thought about buying her a Visa gift card but you can only use those in the US.

What are you talking about? A Visa card can be used anywhere in the world.

I sent Visa gift cards to the UK many times. The only problem is activation;

they need to call a 1-800 number in the US to activate it.

1. open another checking account in the US (a free one)

2. send the atm card to the daughter.

3. deposit what you want in the checking account.

tell her not to keep checking the balance (it cost $$ to check). Also, just tell her to take it out in one shot versus 5 pounds at a time.

Excellent idea. If the ATM card is a Visa or Mastercard debit card, you can request

an "additional card" in her name - then she'd be able to use it for shopping as well as

cash withdrawals.

:goofy: Regarding opening up another checking account here and sending her an ATM card, how do we know about the exchange rate and how that transfers? In other words, if we put $100 in an account how would she know how much to take out in pounds to make $100 . I would be afraid of being overdrawn because of the exchange difference from dollars to pounds.

Regarding the Visa gift card, I just re-read the site and I was wrong about not being able to use in other countries. I read "if your card is stamped for use only in the U.S." , so some must be that way. But it does say "Note: Most Visa Gift cards do not come with a PIN; do not push “debit” or your purchase will be declined." So that means she cannot get cash from the Visa gift card and we want her to be able to.

I guess opening another checking account would be the best, but again, how do figure the exchange rate on what she can take out if she wants to get all the cash in it?. Thanks. :goofy:

a good site to check on just prior to any withdrawal (in cash, everyone keep their comments to themselves).

Try and experiment. Withdraw £100 from an ATM (aka Cashpoint machine) and see how

much the bank charges you (in dollars) for the transaction.

Give her online access to the account so she can monitor her spending.

I use hubbies UK debit card here all the time. He just puts in x amount of pounds I go to xe get a rough idea of the exchange rate add in the atm fees and bank fees and draw out in increments of $10. Can always tell when I haven't figured exchange properly cuz it wont give me what I am asking for.

Try using a credit union for the account. They often dont have a lot of the fees that banks have and also usually have interest earning checking accounts.
