Social security number (not card) the next working day at SSA?

Hi all,

I have read that once you take your EAD card to the SSA they will send you your SSN card within a week or two usually.

However, I have seen that if you come back the next day, it is sometimes possible to get the actual 9-digit number from one of the SSA staff then and there.

Has any done this/heard of this?

Thanks.

Never heard of anything like that but who knows. I remember in my case I had to apply for a SSN twice due to internal issues in that SSA office. It took me like a little less than 2 months to get the actual SSN card in the mail! I did take my EAD with me in both visits.

It could work...

Before you go, do a SAVE case-check online ( https://save.uscis.gov/casecheck/ ) and see if the status of the inquiry is "Case returned to agency".

If it is, it's likely your SSN was assigned already.

Yes I have heard of it. They can do a printout with the number on it. You go back because they won't give it out except in person. Ask ahead of time. Our lady said she already submitted without entering something necessary in order to give it out if we came back. I don't know what she meant.  Or maybe she needed to print a case identifier to pull it up with the next day.  The card came in a week anyway so not really worth a trip back and the long wait.

Yep I did that (while still on my I-94) - the person processing your initial application can give you guidance as to timeline, but I went in after a few days and they just wrote my number down on a post-it note :)

Did this work? I requested my SSN on Monday noon and checked at 11pm the same day the SAVE database and it said 'Case returned to agency' already.

Don't know if I should go get the number or just wait for the card to arrive.
