Hello all. I've had a brief break from VJ and have recently had my fingerprints taken for my ROC. I never got round to removing the "valid only with DHS authorization" message on my social security card. Now I would like to do that but am not sure if this is allowed now that my greencard has expired? I have the extension letter but I'm worried that won't suffice for them.

Also, if I were to change jobs, would the greencard plus extension letter suffice for my I-9 documents?

Thank you for your responses in advance!

You should be able to do it according to SSA policy manual. Check d. Expired I-551 with Notice of Action (Form I-797) https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211025#c1

For changing jobs, expired green card + NOA is sufficient but HR people could be ignorant about it. A SSN card without restrictions + a valid Driver's license also suffices I9 requirements. If they give you a hard time in both of these cases, you could also try getting a I551 stamp on your passport, which acts like a temporary green card. Worse comes worst; tell them to speak with their immigration lawyers to confirm your situation.
