I can't answer the DL question, but for the SSN, you will need your I94 record which you should be able to get online a few days after your arrival, and your foreign passport.

Good Luck!

Take I-94 and passport about 7-10 days after you land to an SSA office.

You'll have to google Florida DMV for exact requirements, but will probably be I-94, passport, SSN card, proof of address (eg utility bill) and proof of insurance (like insurance binder).

I94

you should have got a copy when you entered the US, if you never received it you can get your copy here

https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

wait a couple weeks after entering the US, then go lodge your application at the nearest social security office.

Then you you can go to DMV once you receive your card in the mail.

good luck : )

People who enter via air or sea won't be given a physical I-94. It's all electronic.

If you still have your maiden name it's fine but if not then you need the original marriage certificate as proof of name change.

You can still change your name on the card after you got married.

What the Social Security office wanted to see when I applied for my SSN was the SSN application, your passport and your visa, your birth certificate and a copy of the I-94.

About the Florida DL, I'd suggest to ask someone at the DMV in your city. They know what documents you need.

I personally cannot get a Georgia DL until I have at least NOA1 or my work permit.

Thanks every body.. I read online about a form called "ss-5".

Do I need to file this also?

Yes. That's the document you need to apply for a SSN.

Can't your USC fiancee help with all this? I mean she is just leaving all this to yourself?

I was processed into the US on March 13th on a K1 through pre clearance at Toronto airport. I didn't actually get into the US until March 14th, though, due to a 12 hour winter storm delay.

I know people say wait to go apply for the SSN. But, as soon as I landed, I went to obtain the marriage license and then went to the social security office.

I'm not sure if it's the same at all offices, but I'd guess they're similar. The process went like this:

1) Sign in on a computer screen (selecting that you're there to obtain your first SSN).

2) A number is then printed out for you and you wait for your number to be called (took 2.5 hours).

3) You had mentioned reading about a SS-5 form. Those were readily available at the office to grab and fill out. You can do so from home though and print it and bring it with you. If you do choose to fill it out at the office, bring a black pen with you. All they had at the office I went to was a container full of pencils but the paper said to use pen.

4) Go up to the window when eventually called and give them your documents. Make sure the SS-5 is filled out completely before you go up. They were sending people away if it wasn't filled out, and I assume they had to go fill it out properly, grab a new number, and wait hours again.

5) They go through your info, ask a couple questions (mainly verifying that your information is correct), and then have you acknowledge that all the information provided is correct to the best of your knowledge under penalty of perjury.

The only documents they needed from me was my passport, the I-94 information (I brought in a page printed from the government website that another user referenced in this thread in several posts above mine), and the completed SS-5 form.

They told me they needed to verify all my information and documents and said it would take about ten days and that my card will be sent in the mail after that if everything checks out (which it should). She also gave me a paper with a reference number and phone number and said I can call it to check the status of my application.

As soon as you have your SS # you should be able to get and Driver License - if your I-94 is still valid, of course. So, hurry up :)

Most likely, you will have to take written and driving tests. You can get Florida DMV handbook at any DMV office. Should be no fee. My husband got it for me in advance, so when i arrived, the book was already "waiting" for me :)

To get your DL you will need your passport, I-94, proof of residential address and SS#.

Length of Driver License issuance will be the same as it's indicated in your I-94. Not long enough, but at least it's something to begin with. When you receive your EAD, you will just need to go back and re-new your DL.

So, if you file your AOS asap, a "gap" without DR won't be long.

Here is my experience:

1.Applied for SS# within a week after arrival.

2. Obtained Driver License when I got my SS#. - both under maiden name.

3. Got married and went back to Social Security office with our Marriage Certificate to change my last name from maiden to married on my SS card.

4. FILED AOS/EAD/AP. Didn't change my name on my DL - at this point it didn't make any sense due to my DL soon to be expired.

4. Received my EAD card and was able to renew my DL - got it with my married name on it.

So, technically, i didn't have a Driver License only for 3 weeks.

I know, you asked "no links" :) but this one will be really helpful - this is from FDLIS (Florida Driver License Information System). And it's updated. 03/13/2017. Take a look at page 37 - it's about K-1's DL issuance. And according to this looks like it would be possible to get a DL wihout SS# - but i would check on that.

http://www.flhsmv.gov/ddl/aila/acceptabledocuments.pdf

Good luck :)

Also, according to the link.. well, p.37 :), you should be able to re-new your DL with I-797 receipt of your I-485 - no need to wait for actual EAD card... So, probably, no DL "gap" at all.
