So when I move over to Philly, there's a social security office five minutes from my fiances apartment - I was just wondering if all social security offices give out social security numbers, because somebody informed me that not all of them offer this service.

As a side note, what do I need to take to the social security office to get a number, on a K-1 visa?

You need your passport with the K1-visa, your original marriage certificate and a copy of your valid I-94. Got my SSN in the mail 8 days after i applied for one.

I'd check on your closest Social Security office if they offer this service. If not, go to the Social Security office in the bigger cities in your state. They should provide this service.

Oh so you can't get an SSN until married? Didn't know that!

Yes, you have to be married. They want to see your original marriage certificate.

And you need to fill out the SSN application form. Just google new SSN non US-citizen.

Please do not give bad advice.

the op has a k1 visa, so they're entitled to get a ssn, married or not. It's highly advised to go in and get one before marriage as some ss officers are not familiar with k1 guidelines and may try to refuse a ssn to a married k1 entrant.

op, please read the ssn forum and follow the ssn guide from vj. You can also go to the ssa website and see which docs are needed to apply for a ssn. I believe they list the services offered in each office there too

I'm a K1-visa holder myself so I just wrote what I did in order to get my SSN. It may differ from state to state.

My (now) husband applied for his SSN a week after he arrived in the U.S.  That was before we were married.  He provided his passport with the K1-visa and a copy of his valid I-94.  His SS card arrived in the mail a week later.

If the person at the office doesn't want to issue you a SSN, firmly and politely ask to speak to a supervisor.

The Social Security Administration is a Federal agency so there is no variation by state like there is for marriage licenses, driver licenses, schools, insurance --which fall under State government.

Bring your I-94 showing legal entry to the U.S. on your K-1 visa within the first 75 days after POE (They will not issue you an SSN if you have 14 days or less remaining on your I-94, regardless if you're married or not), but maybe a week or so after POE so they have time to put you into the SAVE system, bring your passport with your K-1 visa inside, other forms of original ID as well.

You DO NOT need to be married to qualify for an SSN. I received my SSN a month before I even got married. See my signature for timeline on this.

Cheers.
