I am also talking in general. When you are in the immigration process(petition in place) you can only enter with immigration visa, unless you get lucky and they don't find it out. But that is the rule as far as I know.

Simply not the case, most people have no issue visiting, somewhere there is a mega thread about it.

Visited my husband 3 times after marriage before gaining an immigration visa.  Twice during the immigration process.  Stayed no longer than 10 days, had a job and apartment and proof of my ties which was never asked for.  Zero issues.  Just for clarity I specifically said I was visiting my husband when asked about the purpose of my visit. 

 

I agree with boiler that the OP should wait to file until they are living together.  If working is important he can return to Canada and work and they can proceed with consular filing vs adjustment of status.
