Hi,

So i made it to the US and it's been a month. It is hard getting an opportunity. I have done BS in Industrial and Manufacturing engineering. I have three and a half years work experience with the firms that basically worked in the field of industrial construction as a project Engineer back in Pakistan. Now, I am looking for work and would really appreciate any help. I just want to get my foot in the industry and any help regarding this will mean a lot to us.

Each city has a chamber of commerce. Find it.

Once you find it - talk with the secretary - tell her you want a schedule of events and

let her know you'd like to attend.

Then - go in person to the Chamber of Commerce Office - talk with the

President of the Chamber, tell him/her you want to volunteer at several of their events.

Attendees at chamber events are business owners and sales geeks,

all looking for new business. It usually is an informal-enough gathering

where you can approach people and talk with them.

Now, the cool thing about being a volunteer there - is that you will be

talking to everyone at least once - you might be at the reception table,

you might be at the greeters table, you might help to run the audio/video system -

whatever - but - the point is that you can meet everyone there, face to face.

Attend 2 or 3 of these, and folk remember you. When folk remember you,

they will remember you are seeking employment and will consider you ,

because yer just not some name on a piece of paper - they met you at

a chamber event and know that you were volunteering, helping out the chamber.

Go Get Em, and Good Luck !

PS - live in a really small town? go to the biggest town that's within 15 miles of yer house.

The world is short of engineers and do not discount this method - you are from Canada which is full of engineers from Pakistan so as well as the formal network like this, other informal networks such as Pakistani Meetup groups and job related ones local to OP will apply.

ntern/volunteer and get US experinece in your resume and build your language/social skills.  - CONTRACTING is better option, you get paid not work for free and keep wages depressed with false hope and economic new Graduate employment.

Chambers of Commerce volunteering gets you access to attendee lists, an opportunity to call back later referencing the meeting ..... do not assume the language skills of the OP are not good either.

The OP is new here, and networking effectively might help him sooner than would other methods.

My English is pretty good. I almost pronounce 90 percent of english words in an American accent (My working with the american clients in my homecountry obviously helped) I am trying to build a network here among the desis. It may take some time. But every single day, i get a feeling that i am loosing precious amount of time. So time is something i really don't want to waste. I just want to get a start. That's it.
