hehehe crime rates (even violent crime rates) were high among Irish and Jewish immigrants when they came here. Cultural differences I guess.

It's a good thing we've got all the Irish and Jews back in their countries or in jail now. I feel safer.

There are many more illegal Hispanic immigrants than there were illegal Jewish or Irish immigrants. Lets compare apples to apples at least.

everyone who came ehre during their time was legal.there was no immigration laws on the book then

But that fact doesn't stop the open borders freaks from asserting that 19th Century America is somehow equal to and the same as 21st Century America. And that the 6 billion+ population of the world has migration rights to immigrate to America at will just 'cause they want to.

And you have to wonder somehow that illegal aliens don't realize they are breaking the law if they have to hire criminal smugglers to enter the USA and to buy counterfeit and stolen identities to work here.

Who ever said illegal immigrants don't realize they are breaking laws? Sometimes what's right is illegal and what's wrong is legal. I know that's a tough concept for some folks, but there you have it. Most people consider not letting their children starve, by any means necessary, to be what's right. That's not the case with all immigrants, but a good number.

That's no excuse for throwing open the door of 21st Century America to 6 billion+ people...many of whom live on less than $1 a day. While I pity them...it is rather stupid to sh*t in our Cheerios to accomodate the world. If you're on a guilt trip...Mother Theresa died in 1997 and you can attempt to fill her shoes. I never claimed to be a saint. ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

The guilt is so strong it keeps people from being honest.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Uh, no.

"Under the one-year pilot proposed Feb. 23, up to 100 Mexican fleets could be granted access to U.S. highways after a series of on-site inspections,"

And there is NO limit on fleet size.

NC has indeed a high rate of hispanic DWI's.. but, I would say it's more economically than racially... in this county where I live, where hispanics are still a minority, all 3 groups, white, black and indian have an equally amount of DWI's.. mainly cuz it's a poor county, not because indians are drunker than whites or blacks drink more than hispanics..

If you can accept that, then why doesn't it follow that any group with a higher poverty rate also will have a higher crime rate?

I'm still waiting for your opinion on the story Alex.

Here's mine:

1. Hispanics have a larger percentage of illegals in NC than other ethnic groups (because they can walk over the border, if Thailand were connected to the US it would be the same for Thais). The story is just about NC.

2. Illegal immigrant Mexicans don't have respect for any of our laws (they came here illegally). So why would they respect our drunk driving laws? All (most?) races drink and drive but this story is about the rate being 3 times higher for Hispanics. The illegal Mexican immigrants push up these stats for all Hispanics.

3. From reading the story it says they don't have the "DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE" campaigns that we have had growing up. So it's not something ingrained in them.

4. When you travel away from home for work you tend to hang with the boys more and do bad things. I travel for work and have experienced this myself.

In the national picture (according to that research study I found), fatally injured hispanic & latino drivers have the second highest rates of occupant and non-occupant alcohol levels, next to Native Americans.

well, unfortunately luckystrike is right in some aspects.. illegal immigrants usually don't come from big cities, or have a high number of college graduates or from rich families.. they come from small towns where sometimes spanish is not even their native language (cuz they speak indigenous dialects), and as any latin american country, govt, culture and stuff like that are centralized in capital of the country, or capital cities from each state, so, while there are campaigns for don't drink and drive, most of them don't reach those small communities where these people come from, and yeah, Mexico doesn't have a serious culture of anti-drunk & drive (heck, I have drove a lottt of times tipsy from a party to my house in Guadalajara, but a big difference is that in Mexico you don't have to drive highways to get home, since the clubs are 5 minute drives from ur house)..

What do you mean? I've shared lots of opinions. Do you want me to say "drunk driving is bad"? "It was an acceptable piece of journalism"?

Even if they were not inundated with the anti-drunk-driving education we get as kids, their kids will. So this is something that will iron itself out in the next generation. Being a multcultural society is not all rosy, but is ultimately beneficial for everyone.

Thailand is the same way Pedroh. People still bribe cops when caught driving drunk.

Recently we had a huge party in Thailand (200+ people) and the cops showed up only to eat and get drunk!!! In uniform!!!

Slightly tangential story: On India day in Edison NJ (very large Indian population), Indians take out a parade. Like Indians are wont to do on such occasions, they get very loud, very rowdy and generally behave quite badly. Indians don't mind it because we're used to it on occasions like this. Our white neighbors aren't as charitable about the behavior. And they're the ones who write for the local papers. I've read articles very similar to this in tone but in the context of Indian people in this area.

Bottom line, the reporters are right but we wish they wouldn't say it :innocent:

thanks

I just hope no one you know is killed by any drunk driver. But anyone killed by an unlicensed, illegal immigrant is worse because they shouldn't be in the country in the first place. So it is a completely avoidable accident.
