The N400 process is very clear, and applications must advance from stage to stage for completion. You can review it in the CLAIMS Reference, view page 7 of the first doc:

You are correct, there are stories from members that go through the stages without with on-line status being updated. But that's more of a failure on the officers end to update statuses, then actually not advancing through the stages. Geez...government employees not properly doing their jobs...who would have thunk it!!!

I know...they really suck at it...sometimes, they don't even know what they're talking about, very unreliable...In my case, it would be 7 months by next week & until now I have not receive any update or interview letter after my fingerprints. Very disappointing to think considering the expensive fee of the application..What a shame on their end...I thought they are a fast-paced culture but I guess, they don't really care if the bgc of applicants are sitting there for a long time..

I was wondering if someone had any insight on my question asked earlier:

 

I just received notice this morning on my online case status that "an interview has been scheduled and we will mail an appointment notice"  (you can see my timeline below in my signature)

 

I'm assuming this means my background check has cleared?  Or just part of it?  Does it really mean that an appointment has been scheduled, or is it just a different way of saying "inline for interview"?

From what I've seen on VJ, unless it's one of the notorious system gliches, your interview has been scheduled. Hopefully you'll have the letter within a week. Congrats!

Thanks so much for your response.  I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic until I see an actual date online, or get a paper letter because I submitted my application only last month.

And that's why I'm being cautiously optimistic..NY is one of the slowest, if not THE slowest, field offices out there...usually they average 9-12 months.

Well, we got the reply about the service request..... we used the "non-delivery of Other Notice".... they are saying that they received a notice as "undeliverable " and that hubby missed his biometric appointment so his case is "in suspense " and they took the liberty to schedule a new appointment.  We have the original letter stamped and signed off on, so since hubby works during the newly scheduled time, we will try to go early... seriously, USCIS?

So August 17th came and went and I received no update on the Service request I had submitted in the hope that It would generate a touch on my case and maybe and update to the online case status.  My online case status still hasn't been updated since January 9th when I was mailed a notice with my biometrics appointment information.  I attended that appointment 01/25/17 and since then, nothing !!  Does anyone know if there is way to check on the status of a service request without calling the USCIS toll free number ?

You can create an online account, register your case, and there you can see the status of the service request. Once you're in that specific case, under the main status there are 2 columns.  The one on the left shows completed things, the one on the right shows things not done yet. We were supposed to get an answer on ours at the mid of July, but didn't receive it until this past weekend.  Answers to the requests vary from "your case is not outside processing times" to "your case is at NBC" (still in background checks) to "your case is in suspense due to returned mail"...

Apologies but I'm not fully understanding your answer. I am already registered for online and text status updates of my N400 application.  When I click on that case, I see the last update to the N400 case (fingerprint notice sent).  I can also see that there is a service request associated with it but don't know how to get any more information that what I can see in the attached screenshot ?

Your service request has not been assigned to anyone yet. Therefore it's sitting there waiting. Hubby's took an extra month+ to receive an answer. All you can do is wait, or possibly contact a senator/congressman if you're outside of normal processing times. For my husband, he is not but there are people at our local office who applied after him and have gotten interviews and oaths. We took the route of service request for "mail not received/other" as others had done and got our seemingly unique answer.

Thanks for your reply.  So that is the most recent information on the service request, even though the date of that update is the day I submitted it (July 26th) ??  Like you, I have seen others submit their cases after me (going through the same field office) and they've already progressed beyond where I am at.  Posted processing dates state that the St. Louis field office is currently working on N400 applications received on or before October 26th, 2016.  I submitted my application in December 2016 so not technically outside of the normal processing timeframe yet.  Not much more I can do at this point besides sitting and waiting.

Sadly, it is what it is... I get the USPS informed delivery for our postal mail every day, and there's another piece of mail coming today for my husband from USCIS..... probably nothing new, but how odd

I have a Global security clearance, meaning I can travel easily.  To get approved for it, I had to go through all sorts of bio and background checks.  Assuming they have all the information already in the system, why it is taking long for them to clear my case?

Another point which some members mentioned here is travelling internationally. It shouldn't be an issue as long as the travel is short. 

After filing I have travelled to Canada ( less than a week) for business meetings and will be going there again.
