Hi All!

 

I would like to preface this by saying that I know the ultimate decision lies with the consulate officer but any insight would be most helpful.  I am a US citizen living in Uganda with my Ghanaian girlfriend.  We would like to travel to the US together for my parents 40th anniversary in a few months.  I am working here in Uganda as a consultant and she is interviewing for jobs but is currently unemployed and on a tourist visa.  Both of her parents are deceased in Ghana but she has close extended family. Her savings is low but I could deposit funds to boost her bank statement

 

1.  Would she be able to apply for a visa and interview at the Kampala embassy?

2.  If so, what, if any, documents would she need from Ghana?

3.  What are you thoughts on approval?

She'll have to check if Ghana visitors could apply from Uganda. Applicants are encouraged to apply where they live. 

 

Ghana nationals face long odds for a B2 visa. Depositing large amounts in her account is not a solution. She has to show ties to her country, which appear slim based on your description. She applies in Kampala\Accra, with only the $165 application fee at risk. Has she applied in the past?

The Consulate in Uganda may not be able to properly assess her ties, so more of a risk than applying where she lives and has her life.

 

I can not think of any documents she would need from Ghana.

You forget to mention your upcoming fiance visa petition, your unemployed status, etc.

We are trying to determine which route is best.  Not sure if we are permanently moving back to the US yet so exploring all options!  Would my (US Citizen) employment status effect her B-2 visa application?

Thank You!  We know about the situation at the US Embassy in Ghana which is why we are exploring whether it would be helpful to apply elsewhere.  She has not applied for a US visa in the past but has done some extensive travel around Africa.

Applying elsewhere, aka consulate shopping, doesn't work. Best to apply where applicant has ties, ie Accra.

USC employment status has nothing to do with a foreign national's B2 visa attempt. Seems kinda odd for two unemployed individuals to spend on US trips and visa expenses.

Some people are independently wealthy, in Colorado they are know as Trustafarians.

  1. I am not from Boulder but nice try
  2. I work freelance and live within my means - when I want to travel or need more income, I work.  Otherwise I enjoy my very modest life.
