We received a mail of Request for Initial Evidence, we submitted the W2 for the joint sponsor but failed to submit the petitioners docs and i864. Can somebody explain to me what a Federal income tax is different from w2? I guess they are asking for it accdg to the mail. Thanks in advance!

Yes it is. You should have submitted the 1040 or tax transcript from the IRS. You can obtain that online. W2s alone do nothing.

W2 is a summary of your income, and taxes paid, doesn't show if you filed your tax returns.

Use IRS tax transcripts. You can order them online, by mail, or walk in at local IRS office.

I would go with IRS transcripts since you got RFE. In the past I've used the HR Block returns and worked fine but the ultimate proof for tax returns are IRS transcripts. They are so easy to get as I mentioned.

Aren IRS transcriptd and 1040 the same thing?

Yes. They are essentially the same thing. The only difference is that the tax transcript proves that you actually filed your taxes with the IRS. 1040 however, you can download off the internet fill out and sign without actually filing. So the IRS tax transcript is a more acceptable form for immigration purposes, although copies of your signed 1040 would work as well.
