Is there a real value for a Pet Passport (specifically Germany to US)...?

Did they have to be 'sedated' - were they mad at you when they finally got home? any issues? We're bringing Prince Oskar to the US soon, just wanted to get a heads up.

I haven't travelled with cats overseas (though I believe mags has) but I don't think you need the pet passport to go to the US, just if you will take it back to Germany. I believe you need to prove the cat is up to date on his vaccinations. I also read that you should not sedate a cat on a flight -- something to do with cabin pressure.

I love cats too -- however, I'm pretty sure that if my life were threatened my cat would give me the same scornful look she always does and then run away.

Yup, I brought my cats from the UK to the US with me. They didn't need anything done. There are no regulations needed to bring a cat to the US. The only thing you need to do is, once you arrive, take them to your local vet to bring them up to date with any State regs (i.e. rabies shots etc). Contrary to popular opinion you don't need a rabies shot to bring your cat into the US.

The only thing you will need is a "Fit to Fly" cert for the airline. They don't recommend sedation anymore. The sedative, combined with the high altitude can have side effects which is why most airlines won't carry sedated animals.

Some airlines will let you take your pet in the cabin with you, like I did. But you have to book this in advance with your ticket as they limit the amount of animals per flight in cabin.

If you need any more help, just PM me. I've got the links somewhere to all of this. I did weeks of homework over this!

Incidentally, my cats came through it fine with no ill effects, but they were in the cabin with me, rather than the main hold. I don't regret it in the least!

That is SO great that they could be in the cabin with you! :)

If I were moving there, I'd not take my cat. She'd have to be in isolation for something like 6 months (even though she's had her rabies shot). I think that's cruel. I'd rather my mom keep her than have her go through that.

But why? They have that Pet Passport thing now for the UK that makes no quarantine necessary. You just need a few documents and a microchipping and voila.

Ya - the poor little guy already got a Rabies shot the other week - the vet suggested yet another (booster?) before leaving but we think we'll just throw 50Euros on the sidewalk, stay home instead and call it a day...sheesh..

She did mention sedation is not recommended like it may have been a long time ago... like he needs to be sedated anyway.. Such a hard life..eat, sleep..eat..poop..sleep..

It's good to know about the airlines - The CDC says they (airlines) may have stricter regulations - but in the cabin eh? hmm.. I'm assuming that means somewhere where you'd have access to them..not near the seat right?

Thanks for the tips..

I know, he is saying 'please take me home Rey Rey'

At least I think he is... he was surrendered with 3 identical littermates but they're all adopted.

Anyone introduced a kitten to a cat (or older kitten, really) before?

Yeah I looked into it because I was going to apply to a grad program in London (although am now going to NY instead). THe vet said it would be barely an issue. I think the kitty is darling but I am wary of bringing a 6-week-old home! We work full time and everything

one word about pet passport -- if you are thinking of going back to Europe, plan for it at least 6 months in advance. You need to have the vet take a blood sample and send it to a lab in Kansas to prove the cat does not have rabies. You have to wait 6 months from receiving the results to get the pet passport.

some good info here:

Actually, now you're cat has had the initial Rabies shot, I'd go ahead and get him the booster (second shot after 3-4 weeks is normal). If you don't he'll just have to start over in the USA again.

My cats (one per person, my son came over with me) were in Sherpa Bags (airline approved) which fit under the seat in front of you. It does restrict your leg room a bit, but at least I could make a fuss of them and it was much less noisier than in the main hold.

As for the poop and pee pee issue. They recommend that you don't feed them for 12 hours before the flight and no water 7 hours before. I put some newspaper in the bottom of their bags just in case, but they were fine. No accidents!

I flew Delta if that helps any. They couldn't have been better IMO.

did that when nessa got here - much of it depends on your assessment of the older cat. my cat (about 10 years old) didn't bother nessa's (about 1 year old) very much, and currently it seems to be the other way around - her kitty beating up on mine :P

just keep a close eye on them for a few days. i have read somewhere on vj something about putting perfume? or something on each cat so it will keep their noses occupied.
