Confusing

You can probably use turbotax to figure the tax itself, if you don't want to do it by hand. Everything I had already explained to you is the same. You can't efile. And no you don't file 1040NR, you send the election statement as I said earlier and file as a tax resident for the whole year. This is required to be able to use the 2555 to exclude income you earned prior to becoming a resident, and also required to file jointly.

I don't understand what you mean by 1040 not being needed? You have to fill it out and send it. That's the tax return. The rest is supporting documents/forms. You have to send it all together by mail.

thanks for the technical corrections . You are of course 100 % correct.

A return is for the full year, reporting of income could be for a partial period.

Also, married separately...married singly does sound more fun but we know that is never going to happen!!! ha ha !!

 

There will be no form 2555 for me as i have no earned income.

There will be interest income primarily and some shifting of funds within the family but since i will be reporting all this in the country i am in, i would very much like to avoid having to do it all over again in the US and thus while not gaining anything, just complicate my life unnecessarily.

 

of course, without numbers, it is difficult to assess future coarse of action.

I am just little confusing about some info in form 2555 , what should I add in part 1 no 9

"List your tax home during your tax year and date established "

Since I was from foreign country and work in another country and get vacation to travel back to my country during last 12 months before I move here

"Country you are from, xx/xx/xxxx" - where the date will be your birthdate if you were born in that country and lived there since, and;

"United states, xx/xx/xxxx" - where the date is the first day you were present in the United states

 

(if you are filing jointly with elective statement)

if your tax home immediately before coming to the US (the first year) was another country, then you put that country and the first date of your tax home in that country instead. Only you know your specific details.
