Not even a lunch break ? 🤔

I have found that American culture is very much a workaholic culture. Live to work, instead of work to live (except for USCIS 🤣 ). What is it like only 10 vacation days a year normally ? We get standard 25 days over on this side of the pond. We try to do as little as possible, if we can. Preferably in the pub around lunch time, maybe we'll make it back to the office that day, maybe not 😂 haha

I am worried it's gonna be a culture shock to me. 😬

Oh he gets a very short lunch break but yeah as for days off he just informed me that they turned down his request for a day off for his retinologist appointment at the end of September. So he said well I guess I will just not go in that day and claim it as medical which he has had to do before. He gets no set vacation time that he can take off. Its basically just put you want these days off without pay and we will maybe grant you them. Now here in Canada I have 3 weeks holidays and because I will be hopefully leaving partway through my year my boss told me yesterday that they were granting me a week and a half and was that sufficient. I said yeah as it is with banked time. I currently have 3 weeks I can take and that is all paid. The board already said I can take my unused days and they will just pay me out when I go to leave. I also have my group retirement savings plan to pay out as well which by January will be 2000. Not bad for only a year and a half. I have worked in some capacity since I was 15. I also am used to working without holidays. I worked as a manager for Subway restaurants for 7 years and got no paid holidays. I worked 60 hours a week sometimes lol but I made good money. So working and no vacations is nothing new to me.

I work 10 hour days with 20 minute lunch break and 4 paid vacation days per year. That's life.

Crazy stuff, what can you do with 4 days, can't even take a week off ...

Yeah, my fiancee gets like 30 days off paid or something crazy like that. I have a bunch of paid holidays, but not really any paid vacation. Just have to save money to cover both the cost of vacation and the missed time at work. My boss is pretty flexible with time off as long as there is advance notice.

Wow  .. maybe I should convince my fiance to move here instead of me going there, haha :D sounds crazy. I guess it also depends on what industry you work in.

So what is the difference between paid holidays and paid vacation ?

I can just say, I want tomorrow off, Boss says: "yeah sure"

I can just say, I want to work from home on Friday, Boss says: "cool !"

I can email and say, Not feeling so great, gonna stay in bed, No one says a thing ... we don't even need doctors notes.

EDIT: Sorry, to stay a bit on topic here as well, fiance says she phoned Senators office, the lady who deals with Immigration is on vacation (ironic) haha ... will be back Monday, we will try again and see what she says.

It really depends on the company. There are generally like 7 holidays through the year that a lot of people have off and get paid as if they were at work like Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's etc. It's even different from employee to employee in my company. I'm always on time and ahead of schedule on my projects, so I get a lot more leniency than someone who is late frequently or always behind schedule. That also determines eligibility for overtime pay (150% hourly rate for any hours over 40 in a week). If I want to earn an extra $900, and there's work available to do, I can take it. That can easily offset the expense of taking time off.

Ah gotcha .. holidays are like public or bank holidays, as we call the them in the UK. I guess federal over there and vacation is actually paid time off

We have 30 days of paid vacation as well here in Germany, plus in Bavaria the most holidays (13).  Lucky us! That's gonna become hard; moving to the country of 10 days paid vacation and 3(?) holidays? :)

I know you are going to do great, same as @TearsOfBabylon next Tuesday, but it's normal to feel nervous and excited. You both have the right to do so and then let out a sight of relief once you are approved. You two got lucky and had a speedy process, that's true, and I somehow understand the mild guilt given the current situation. But it shouldn't be that way because your good luck or others bad luck is something random that just happens. So just a small step and we all can celebrate you reaching the final line... At least final for now :P

Good luck to you two!

Thank you, my friend! You're sweet! And you'll be due soon, I hope! Hugs!
