Hi guys,

I wish I could have found this website earlier, so that I didn’t have to go through AOS with lawyer. But after all, I feel thankful for all of you who gave me lots of information and insights about immigration, including the ROC process. My GC is going to be expired in April next year, and I know it’s still early, I would prefer to get to know it sooner than later. I have too much time in my hand right now. I hope you guys can help me with some questions here:
1. At first, I want to add my husband to be co-owner of my credit card, but when I asked the bank, they said if we do that, something happened; one person has bad credit, the other also gets affected. So my husband refused to do it. He has 2 credit cards of his own, and has not paid off the debts yet, so he is afraid he will affect me on this. He did add me into his checking account. We have another joint saving account.

So do you think if we don’t have joint credit card, would it affect a lot on the document?

2. My husband recently resigned from job, and our plan B is if in 2 months he can't find another new job, we are going to move out of California. I have a few connections in other state which might help me to find a job.

My question is: when I move, I will have to do these 3 things: filling in the AR-11, changing address online, and make an INFO pass appointment to make sure if it go through or not. Is it correct? Or I just need to do one of three things above?

Is it making Info pass appointment means you have to go to the local USCIS nearby to talk to them?

3. In the I-751 form,
Part 1:
-Alien Registration Number is the USCIS number on the 2 year Green Card right?
-USCIS ELIS Account Number , what is this? And I don’t think I have knowledge about this one.
-Mailing address: what does “In Care of Name” mean?
Part 7:
-Item 2: I have requested services of and consented to _____________, who is/is not a ….: I am going to file the I-751 by myself, so this one I don’t have to fill in right?
And part 7 is for me (petitioner), part 8 is for my USC spouse right?
Sorry for the long question, I understand English, but not all of them, my husband does have some problems in reading English, that’s why I want to make it clear here.

Thanks so much for your time and understanding.

Hi! We are going to go through ROC next year march so I totally understand planning ahead thing. I hope I can help answer some of your questions.

1. While you might not be comfortable getting a joint credit card, you do have joint finances in terms of an account which is a good thing. Is his name on any leases, car titles, insurances (health, car), listed as a beneficiary, electric or internet bills? Having his name on that stuff will help you too. To add my husband's name to bills I kept insisting to as it was for "immigrations" so they stopped saying "oh we can't". Bologna they can't!

Can you add your husband as an authorized user on your card not necessarily a co-owner? That's what i did with my husband as he had zero credit to his name and it has worked well.

2. Moving. Yes you definitely need to let USCIS know when you do that. You don't have to do all three of those things. Many people may choose to maybe do two or more of those in order to make sure that they received your address change and changed it accordingly as USCIS can drop the ball sometimes. So they do it for their own benefit. Infopass is when you go to a local office. I have never done that so I am unfamiliar with the process. Some people just show up while others make an appointment (so I've read on these forums

3. In the I-751 form,
Part 1:
-Alien Registration Number is the USCIS number on the 2 year Green Card right? Alien registration number is the A number that you would find on top of the NOA letters you have received over the different processes. You can also find it on the green card; it is labeled as USCIS#
-USCIS ELIS Account Number , what is this? And I don’t think I have knowledge about this one. ELIS account number is something you would have created. If you don't remember making one, you probably didn't so don't worry about it. I left it blank for AOS with no issues so...
-Mailing address: what does “In Care of Name” mean? "In care of" or C/O  a way to send a letter to a recipient who is temporarily staying somewhere else or receiving mail somewhere else. If it doesn't apply to you write N/A per the form instructions
Part 7:
-Item 2: I have requested services of and consented to _____________, who is/is not a ….: I am going to file the I-751 by myself, so this one I don’t have to fill in right? Correct
And part 7 is for me (petitioner), part 8 is for my USC spouse right? yes
Sorry for the long question, I understand English, but not all of them, my husband does have some problems in reading English, that’s why I want to make it clear here. and that's why this forum is here :-)

If any of this info isn't quite right I'm sure someone here will set it straight, and I apologize in advance. This is based on what I have seen on this form. i hope some of this was helpful for you.

Hi JJGussas,

thanks for your reply, seems our filing date is very near each other.

1. As for finance situation: honestly, we don't have much papers here

-car title: he bought his car before he met me, so the car title and insurance is under his name and his mother's name. MI oreover, I don't have any driving license yet.

-lease: we are living in his mother's house (under her name), so we don't have any lease agreement

-utility bill: we pay this in cash monthly so no record of this

-health insurance: we are still working out on this and waiting from the government

-phone bill: we have our own plan because i need my special plan to call back to home country, his plan can't do it

-we don't have any mortgage and loans

*we do have our names on his checking account statement, and saving account statement

*we do have our idividual mail sending to each of us of same address from the governement

Do you think these joint accounts would be good enough for the process?

And yes, I would go back the bank and ask them to do authorized user for my husband.

2, 3:  I hope I would not have to move and things could work out here, but sometimes that's life. Your info is very helpful, I appreciated it a lot. : )

FInger crossed for your paperwork process and mine next year ^_^

Yeah we are going to be pretty close, probably a month apart or so! I'm counting down the months until I can wash my hands of all things immigrations!

Car title can be changed if you are willing to go to the DMV, but I would give them a call to see if that is something they can do. car title doesn't have anything to do with driving it so I imagine your name can go on it.  Call them to find out as i said as I don't work there and different states have different rules. On my car insurance I was able to add his name as an unlicensed driver right away - perhaps this is something you can do just so that your name will be listed?

As far as living in his mom's house that's no problem. There are many here who live with parents/in-laws. She can write a letter addressed (get it notarized) to USCIS describing the living situation including the helping pay for utilities. Even if you move have her do that in order to account for the time when you didn't have a lease etc. We don't have any loans or mortgages either

For example, i have a pile on our bedroom floor where I am collecting every month the following : bank account statement, internet bill, credit card statement, both my and his paychecks, electric bill, 401 k statements where he's listed as beneficiary, ANY trip information involving plane tickets and airline itineraries, copies of our state-issued ID's (showing shared domicile)...and other stuff.

It's good you are both listed on the your account statement, THAT'S something. Some people don't even do that. It shows the shared finances as would the credit card thing if you can get that figured out. Our statements list our address, does yours? If it is, along with the pieces of mail, that would demonstrate shared residence which would correspond with you mother-in-laws letter. Can you get an state issued ID even though it wouldn't be a license? Have you considered getting wills? I only ask as many here indicate that it is a good thing for immigrations seeing. As there are a few documents that you don't have it will only help your case.

Sorry I am speaking with a lot of "woulds" and "coulds" here. Dealing with immigrations can be a mess and it makes us go an extra mile that we probably wouldn't do in any other marriage situation :)  Anytime you are just wanting to add your name (or his) to any sort of statement or document, mention that it is for immigration purposes. It will help. When I called to add husband's name to the electric bill the lady was like "welllll we don't really do that" UNTIL I mention immigrations. Suddenly it was something they could do. Maybe my experience is unique but the answer will most definitely be no if you don't try if you find yourself in a similar situation.

I wish I could help you a bit more as far as what other stuff. I also apologize for this novel that i just wrote . Hopefully someone else can have some more insight.

Oh no, don't say sorry, I really appreciated with what you gave me. They are really helpful.

I had a talk earlier with my husband about car title and insurance; he said he hasn't finished paying the car yet so it doesn't really belong to him, therefore he can't add me into it.

It's okay if he can add me as non licensed driver insurance; but he warned me the insurance money monthly will go up ; that's something I am concerned about also. Our finance is not ready for that; so we will leave it that way. BUT is that true when the insurance goes up when he adds me in? I am still very new to the land though.

Yes, both saving account and checking account statements show our names and our same address. Yes, I also have an state-issued ID showing my same address with him. We don't have any wills yet. We were thinking about life insurance though.

I have a feeling "immigration" is the magic word from now whenever we want to get some paperwork done. :)

Same as you, I will sleep like a baby when this immigration is over. ^ ^ It takes so much nerves.

You are going to be March filer next year right? And I m going to be April filer? Or it depends on the month we file?

I think my insurance went up but it wasn't much. It was also a vehicle that didn't have liability coverage or anything which is probably why that was. Honestly if you can't, you can't; but if you can later down the road I suggest you seize that opportunity. The more evidence you can send to USCIS showing the "trust" you have as a couple (putting each other's names on things/sharing responsibility) the better your case would be. But if there's a lot you feel that you are missing because of your current circumstances you can write a letter stating why you aren't on the car title, or insurance etc. That way you can give them the valid reasons, some of which are out of your hands, and they won't just assume you were lazy and didn't want to add names and what-not.

Like I mentioned, when you are ready to send in the paperwork have your mother-in-law write a statement (get it notarized) describing the living and if/how you pay for utilities or other household things.

We don't have wills either. I guess we should...we just don't.

Our 90 day window opens January 24 next year. I plan on being able to send our tax transcript for the 2017 year so I guess I will end up being a February filer instead of January which would be ideal. My husband's w2's weren't made available until that first week in Feb. I think your 90 day window will be in Feb too unless you don't send it in right away. It's recommended to you send it as soon as possible to get that process started. After all, you don't want to be caught 2 weeks from your green card expiring without the extension letter you'll receive after the ROC process starts. Yikes

Yeah i think so too. But hopefully in a topic like "February filers 2018", not in a topic like "RFE from the USCIS".

I am really not expecting that. :)

I know we will try our best because we already prepare long before the time needed.
