My wife received her US citizenship through Naturalization in January 2012 after being a green card holder and living in the US for 20 years. She then moved to Canada to live with me in December 2012. Now, we are expecting our first child in September and we want to immediately apply for their citizenship and passport.

I see the requirements are that the US citizen parent must have spent at least 5 years in the US, two of which were after the age of 14. However, does this mean that they needed to have been a citizen during those years?

Or does it also apply to those who were green card holders at the time as well?

I can't seem to find anything online about this distinction at all. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Total five years as long as your wife lives in the US for five years including the time being a permanent resident than she is good to go.

Good luck.
