Hi everyone, my fiance only recently filed our I-129f but I've been looking ahead so I am prepared on what needs to be done.  I saw on the checklist for packet 3 that a marriage certificate was listed as something you needed to bring to the interview.  When I got divorced in New Brunswick, I was required to submit my original marriage certificate with my divorce papers and I never had anything returned to me- all I received was a letter stating my divorce was tried and would be granted in 30 days and then my divorce certificate that I sent away for.  So does this mean I will need to request another marriage certificate from where I was married (we had a destination wedding andI do have a copy of the certificate)?? I should also note I legally still have my ex husband's last name incase that makes a difference (ie in showing why my last name is different from my birth certificate, although my passport is my legal name).

So for whatever reason they do not give you anything after divorce in Canada.  I did CR1 process but needed proof of first marriage and proof of divorce.  I had to order both a copy of marriage certificate and a divorce certificate, and yes both cost $$. Vital statistics has the link to order both. Good luck:)

I'm pretty sure you do need that first marriage certificate, as well as your divorce certificate. As for the comment above, I think it just depends where you married and divorced. I was given a divorce certificate after mine became final (in Nunavut), but I did have to order the marriage certificate from Vital Statistics in Ontario.

Edited to add that while you're ordering those documents, order your long form birth certificate if you don't already have one. You will need that for the interview as well!

Although I (the Cdn) hadn't been previous married, my USC husband had, he only had to provide a copy of the divorce decree and bring the original to our interview.

The VJ K1 guide indicates only divorce decree:

Copy of final Divorce Decree(s) or Certificate(s) for the US Citizen and/or foreign fiance if either has been previously married.

Thank you everyone for the replies!! I was married in Arizona and it looks like I just need to send a letter and a small fee to get a certified copy, so I will get one just incase.  Will also order a long form birth certificate, as I only have the short one.  Glad I checked now so not in a panic in a few months!

Hi - I just got my K1 Visa in the mail about 5 weeks ago.   I also was previously married.    When we filed, I only provided my divorce certificate.  I was never asked for my original marriage certificate.

Good luck!!!!

You should not need to provide your first marriage certificate, just your final divorce decree or certificate.
