Hello,

An American cannot support a non-immigrant application for B1/B2 visa. The visitor has to demonstrate that the trip will be supported by him, he has to provide financial, job/university and family ties from Colombia.

An important red flag that you should consider: if your boyfriend gets his B1/B2 Visa and then he plans to spend a month with you he should not say that he has a girlfriend in the USA, he must prove that he will be back to Colombia (specially if he works or studies over there. I.e. he could ask for a job letter confirming that he is a regular employee, etc). He would be denied at POE (Port of Entry) if he says that the reason of his visit is a girlfriend.

Trust me several Costa Rican have been denied at POE since they said that would be visiting a boyfriend/girlfriend. They were told to use the correct visa.

All the best.

A tourist visa is the correct visa for visiting a boyfriend or girlfriend.  They were denied because the CO thought they were not going to just visit, but stay.  That's the key thing to prove.

As an aside, there are countries other than the US that require something like "sponsorship" for tourist visas.  I had a nightmare applying for a tourist visa to Ghana, where they requested multiple letters of invitation.

Why are you both lying about that? I already filled out the paperwork and everywhere I have checked, even calling the office where I live has said that I can, in fact, sponsor a visitor. I think you are both trolls on this site. I've seen this before.

Long before my wife and I applied and received a marriage visa, she applied for a tourist visa and then a student visa. She was turned down for both at the embassy in Bogota. Although she had a job and family in Colombia, she was turned down for not having strong enough ties, especially as a single person.

In the end, I visited her 10+ times in Colombia and Panama before we tied the knot. My family met her at the wedding in Colombia.

All you can do is have your boyfriend apply for the visa and hope for the best. I wish you good luck.

Hello, I can first hand tell you that you do not need to sponsor your boyfriend for a tourist visa. I am now married to a Colombian but he applied for a tourist visa while we were dating so he could go meet my family and got denied. We didn't talk about him having an american girlfriend. I had the same intentions as you. I just wanted him to visit but he applied on his own and said he wanted to go travel there for new years and was denied. I don't know if it's because he didn't tell the truth but the only way the embassy would know about our relationship is through Facebook and I don't know exactly what the background checks consist of but to answer your question, no you don't sponsor your boyfriend.

I think the "something like 'sponsorship' for tourist" you are referring to is more along the lines of itineraries, places going to be visited, and such. I've never heard of a country that require the type sponsorship the OP is referring to where she was advised and willing to provide an Affidavit of Support... meaning being financially responsible for the visiting person. I don't think invitation letters are a form of sponsorship. Sponsorship can mean that you vouch for a person but let's keep it real, with immigration it is usually referring to financial support.

While there is no need for the applicant to give unasked information, they must answer truthfully if they are asked who they are visiting.

So if the interviewing officer doesn't ask about a girlfriend then there's no need to tell them but if they do ask then the only answer is the truth.

To suggest anything else is advising the OPs boyfriend to commit misrepresentation.
