Hi guys, I have a question. I am planning to create a new thread about this, but since everyone on this thread is very friendly and knowledgeable, I wanted to ask here first.

Did you prepare/send any evidence of bona-fide marriage from your family members?

I read online that one of the reasons an USCIS officer might reject an AOS application is because he/she thinks a couple's family members aren't supporting/approving their marriage.

Fortunately I was able to meet my husband's mother who lives in the U.S. and take lot of pictures together.

However, because of our schedule and financial reasons, my husband hasn't been able to meet my family who lives in my home country (Japan).

Some of my family members have social media account, but they do not speak/write good English.

Fortunately my husband speaks very good Japanese, but he can't write it very well.

Because of medical & financial reasons, they won't be able to visit us in the U.S..

They are very much aware of our marriage, and very supportive about it.

Below is a list of things I'm thinking that may be a good evidence that 1) my family is supporting our marriage; and 2) we have a good relationship, so I can bring it to my interview if it's required (some of them might sound silly).

- Screenshot of a chat history between my husband and my family.

- Letter from us to my family both in English and Japanese.

- Letter from my family to us and its translation.

- Baby shower gift for my sister with both of our names on a card.

Is there anything else that might help us prove that we have a good relationship with my family and they are supporting our marriage?

I might be overthinking, I don't even know if there is going to be an interview...but I want to be prepared and make sure my application is approved.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you!

You're 100% overthinking it.

It may be an issue if you try to hide it from your family and be all secretive all about it, which is not what you're doing.

Just because your families aren't able to meet/visit each other, doesn't mean your relationship isn't genuine.

This is often an issue with beneficiaries from third world and some Islamic countries. They hide the relationship from everyone at home and that's what is suspicious to some officers, and rightfully so. But like I said, that your families can't travel across the globe to meet each other is normal I would say. Not everyone can afford it but that isn't a sign that your families don't support your relationship.

Thank you for your reply and I'm a bit relieved by your comment:)

It's my nature to overthink everything...especially after reading lot of stories about AOS applications being denied.

And you're right, we're not hiding it from anybody, and my family is very happy about it.

Thank you for very useful information!

I think one thing they like to see is photos of the couple at family and social events, because they look not just at co-mingling finances but also at co-mingling social lives. That second aspect is harder to prove and photos are one way of achieving that. So, they're not actively looking at evidence that the families support the marriage but more that the couple does couple-y things together - like attend family events.

According to the instructions for Form I-864 on USCIS website:

NOTE: Do not leave the boxes for Item Number 19.a. blank. Print or type the most recent tax year and your total income for that most recent tax year. If the amount was zero, enter “zero” or if you were not required to file a Federal income tax return enter “N/A” for not applicable.
