No you do not need your green card. For a bank you need a job. They wouldn't give it to me another way. You can also try Kohl's, they are pretty easy to get.

As for why it's taking so long. Nobody can really say. AOS could take up to a year. It is different for every person, every case. And t has to do with so many factors that none of us really know all about. Just be patient, it will come.

No, you don't have to wait for your GC, I don't have GC yet, but do have established credit score. Go to your bank and ask for secured credit card :) If you have a job there shouldn't be any problem, and if you don't you may need somebody to co-sign.

You do not have to wait until you get your green card to start building credit.  As long as you have a social security number and income.  Its a very good idea to start now.

You can start with a secured credit card. If you don't have a job, your spouse can add you as an authorized signer on their credit cards as well.

we've had great luck with capital one.  They typically increase your credit line after 6 months of timely payments.

what makes you think you being able to build credit is connected to your green card status? THe only part it is connected to is your SSN. Ever since you got your SSN you could've started to build your credit, even without employment or being married. The ideal thing would be to have it connected to your husbands credit score so that it would "transfer" the length of his open credit cards to your score which would help you get a good credit faster. I wasn't able to, because my husband is with Chase and they wanted to see employment. So I went to BOA... they're famous for giving bank accounts (and thus credit cards) to everyone and anyone. They're not the greatest but I didn't care since all I wanted is to start building credit. You first get a $300 secured credit card. Once I got my job they immediately made it unsecured and gave me another one with $1500 limit. Ever since that I am almost getting daily offers via mail from different credit card companies. Just by having my $300 credit card for 6 months and always paying on time I ended up with a credit score of 770. Go to BOA and have them give you a credit card. You might also be able to get one with Capital One since you already have a job.

Thank you for answers i have 2 jobs. My husband never had a credit card so i think i will just try to get me a card. Answers were so helpful thank you again!

I originally applied for CapOne and IDK why they didn't approve me. I guess my credit history wasn't there when I first moved to the U.S.

Instead, I just walked to the nearest credit union and spoke to one of the personal bankers and they understood my situation and approved me for a $300 secured card which is now a $5,000 card. Sometimes, we just have to do more explaining as New Americans...

when i first got my SSN about 4 years ago through DACA, I applied for Discover and CapitalOne and both gave me 300 without a question (not secured). No previous credit history and I was about 21 at the time. It really just depends.

I got my interview letter this week! I was not expecting anything until the beginning of February, so it was a pleasant surprise. Also, although I was signed up for email and text notifications, nothing was updated online. The stats for the San Antonio office showed that as of September 30, I-485 cases being processed were from December 17th 2016, and my filing date was the end of March 2017 (NOA on April 12).

I know this is the K1 and K3 forum, and I'm adjusting from TN but I hope this gives others some positive news who are in a similar boat!

09/12/2015 - Married my sweetheart of 10 years in Canada (he's a dual citizen)

02/04/2016 - Got TN for 9 month contract and moved to Texas

10/16/2016 - Renewed TN for 12 month contract extension

03/29/2017 - Mailed AOS package (I-130, I-485, I-765, I-131)

03/31/2017 - AOS package delivered to USCIS (Chicago Lockbox)

04/11/2017 - Cheques cashed

04/12/2017 - NOA1 (4) received by sms and email (11:30 PM CT)

04/17/2017 - NOA1 (4) received by mail (dated 04/12/17)

04/28/2017 - Biometrics letter received in the mail (dated 04/22/17)

05/09/2017 - Biometrics appointment

07/22/2017 - Text & Email of EAD approval (I-765)

07/25/2017 - Written notice by mail of EAD/AP combo card approval (I-765 & I-131)

07/26/2017 - Text & Email saying "On July 26, 2017, we mailed your new card"

07/29/2017 - Received EAD/AP combo card by mail

12/06/2017 - Received interview notice by mail (dated 11/27/2017)

01/11/2018 - GC Interview (San Antonio). Approved!

01/19/2018 - 10-year GC received in the mail.

Thanks!

No, the letter in the mail was my first notification about the interview. And now, two days after receiving the letter by mail (and 11 days after the date on the letter) the online status still hasn't changed. Still shows "On April 7, 2017, we accepted the fingerprint fee for your Form I-485".

this helps a lot of us. We continue to check the online status but it may not be of any benefit - we are getting closer every day and we may all start to receive letters any day now.

I wonder why the online system is not updated - I wonder if it is just laziness on their end or if there is an issue with the system.

Once again, congrats and keep us updated after the interview.
