why is it taking so long? :(

i have a question, can i start building my credit? do i have to wait until my green card?

No, you don't have to wait for your GC, I don't have GC yet, but do have established credit score. Go to your bank and ask for secured credit card :) If you have a job there shouldn't be any problem, and if you don't you may need somebody to co-sign.

No you do not need your green card. For a bank you need a job. They wouldn't give it to me another way. You can also try Kohl's, they are pretty easy to get.

As for why it's taking so long. Nobody can really say. AOS could take up to a year. It is different for every person, every case. And t has to do with so many factors that none of us really know all about. Just be patient, it will come.

You do not have to wait until you get your green card to start building credit.  As long as you have a social security number and income.  Its a very good idea to start now.

You can start with a secured credit card. If you don't have a job, your spouse can add you as an authorized signer on their credit cards as well.

we've had great luck with capital one.  They typically increase your credit line after 6 months of timely payments.

Thank you. I am hesitant to travel, I used AP before while on DACA but I have no need for immediate travel. It would be good to have the option while i wait for AOS since I do have elderly grandparents in MX and it would allow me to travel for an emergency. thank you.

It depends whether you would travel by air or car too. Entry at an airport tends to be no problem at all with AP, however by car or ground in general seems to be a different story. I've read that people at some US border entries from Mexico had problems. I've been twice by car to Mexico with AP. The first time I was questioned a lot when I tried to enter again. I've read that the IOs at the ground border tend to not know what the EAD/AP card is and that is exactly what happened to me. The guy was so confused why my K1 visa is expired and why I don't have a replacement visa (he kept on asking for a student visa, dunno why). I tried to explain to him what the card is and that I am waiting on my greencard interview. He let me and my husbands family enter the US after maybe like 5 minutes on asking questions about my status. It was so obvious that he just let me leave without understanding what my real status was. My mother-in-law was so perplex and said how crazy it is that he let us leave without understanding whether I am legal or illegal and what my status is. My husband just laughed and said "those are the perks of being German and not Mexican" (my husbands family is originally from Mexico, now all US citizen). I agree that someone from a Latin American country could've had more problems with this guy being let back into the country, especially having a status like DACA wouldn't probably help in this situation.

The second time I went, I had no problems at all to get back in. As always it depends on the person you talk to at the border. If you're planning on going to see your family by car, collect as much evidence as possible of your status (carry the approval letters for your AP) and maybe a print out from USCIS showing what exactly AP based on AOS through marriage to an US citizen is. You can read the stories of other people crossing from Mexico by car on VJ too that didn't go as well as mine. If you come prepared, I don't think you should have problems entering again. By plane - no problems at all!!!

what makes you think you being able to build credit is connected to your green card status? THe only part it is connected to is your SSN. Ever since you got your SSN you could've started to build your credit, even without employment or being married. The ideal thing would be to have it connected to your husbands credit score so that it would "transfer" the length of his open credit cards to your score which would help you get a good credit faster. I wasn't able to, because my husband is with Chase and they wanted to see employment. So I went to BOA... they're famous for giving bank accounts (and thus credit cards) to everyone and anyone. They're not the greatest but I didn't care since all I wanted is to start building credit. You first get a $300 secured credit card. Once I got my job they immediately made it unsecured and gave me another one with $1500 limit. Ever since that I am almost getting daily offers via mail from different credit card companies. Just by having my $300 credit card for 6 months and always paying on time I ended up with a credit score of 770. Go to BOA and have them give you a credit card. You might also be able to get one with Capital One since you already have a job.

I (petitioner) lost my job on 11/3 and have been receiving disability checks ( i  had an injury at work and they laid me off). My husband got a job in november he's getting paid cash. Does this affect our eligibility for green card for him? you can't show up more than 30 mins early for your appointment. Mine was at 1:20 pm and we where the only case he had that day. We were a bit early and where helped I think on the dot or close to it. The interview itself didn't take long at all. Like 20mins tops. Just make sure you have everything on the list with you. They might not ask for everything but I think they like it when you come prepared.

Have you recieved your card yet and was  your online status updated?

Chances are they might ask at the interview whether the income situation stated on the I-864 is current, it might very well not be mentioned though and could not be an issue either. I'd have some co-sponsor papers lined up if I were you... just in case they ask about what you're doing for living etc. because if they find out about you not having a jo, they'll definitely want to see a co-sponsor.
