Thanks Tanish.

What I have heard is when your partner is filing for the first time since marriage, they would have to file jointly..to get the ITIN etc.,

I will ask my husband to check with the CPA again.

CPA will always ask you to file jointly, because it saves you more tax. You can amend your returns later when you receive your SSN.

Have you received your ITIN yet or are you yet to apply for it? ITIN usually takes more than 6 weeks to receive. Also, there is no requirement for you to file "married filing jointly". The only problem with "married filing separately" is you can not file 1040ez and also you can not file online, as you have to put "NRA" in place of your (beneficiary's) SSN, which online filing doesn't allow.

My wife also filed paper 1040 for the first time and had no idea how to fill up the details. We did a little digging and filled up the 1040 ourselves and later got it checked by CPA to see if we had filled the details correctly.

Like mentioned above, most CPAs will recommend filing jointly because of the deductions. Luckily I was able to file jointly because my wife already had an ITIN. I would've owed the IRS $1200 if I filed separately, so jointly made the most sense for me. It isn't required that you do so, but you reap the benefits of the standard deduction being 12,600 instead of 6,300. I'd recommend plugging in the numbers and seeing what would be more efficient for your situation. My CPA plugged in both options for me, and made the choice easier.

So, I just called NVC to make sure if they received my packages or not and they confirmed that they showed up in mail room today so scan date is going to be March 20th, 2017 (Please correct me if I'm wrong about my scan date). Then I asked how long it's going to take them to review my documents and he said "as of today, the review time has been increased from 8 weeks to 11 weeks"

I'm not happy at all. I hope they review it before that. :(

yes that's your scan date,

whoah, now review increased to 11 weeks :(

Automated system keep saying "Due to large number of caller, all the representative all busy" then phone call end automatically.

When do you usually call to speak with supervisor or representative? Is there alternative ph line that I can call? I was trying to get my case number.

Thanks

none, only one number to call, i suggest you call them around 7:00 to 7:30am Eastern time

it's the least waiting time period to get a hold of the representative

Sounds about right. My case was at the NVC for 11.5 weeks. Scan date 12/9 CC 3/1. They are experiencing an influx of cases, unfortunately.  I've seen it grow from 6 weeks to 8 weeks and now to 11 weeks all in the matter of 3 months.

Just keep calling over and over!.. It would eventually roll-over to a line that would put you on hold for 20-50 mins. I know it sounds weird, but they have lost all sense of normal process at NVC right now that it's unreal...

I hope they have a restructure to fix this delay soon.
