You just need to have someone open letters for you as USCIS often gives less time of advance notice for oath, not like in case of an interview which is given 30 days ahead. But it is all field office specific issue. For example, my field office seems to routinely schedule oaths at interview.

I think it may be easier to just reschedule my flight instead...a rebooking fee vs a whole new headache with these guys...

If this is a personal trip then definitely yes. If this is a work-related thing like a conference then it is a choice between canceling a conference presentation or rescheduling the oath, a choice that is much harder to make.

Since my wife did not accept the first oath date she has been offered, I did not want to go down the same path and wait for a letter from NBC. The fact that the first available date was in 2 weeks was convenient too, since there is enough time to give advance notice at work.

 

Short summary of my conversation with the immigration officer: after swearing that I will tell the truth we went quickly through reading and writing, followed by 6 civic questions. After that we went through N-400, the IO was curious whether I had any traffic tickets (I had one warning, but he was not interested). He also wanted to make sure I did not serve in Polish military forces. I did not, since I was excluded based on poor vision (well, just strong myopia, I see well in glasses). The oath date which is 2 weeks ahead was a small disappointment, since Raleigh makes oath ceremonies once every week, but all in all I was happy that I did not have to wait for approval, instead I was approved on the spot.

 

My impression is  that both my case and my wife's case went through more comprehensive background check and that's why the interview was pretty much only civic questions and not much of anything else. Also, what surprised me is that IO had very thin file of papers related to my case. Many people report seeing an inch-thick pile of documents on IO's desk.

You should feel happy not disappointed.. many people got stuck out there.. And many people not even got into interview stage...

Total processing time from last successful submission to Oath Ceremony: 253 days (8 months and 11 days)

02/26/2012: Arrived SF airport. 

11/28/2016: Eligible for early-filling.

Day 00 - 12/23/2016: Sent N-400 + I-942 to Phoenix, AZ lockbox via USPS.

Day 03 - 12/26/2016: N-400 application marked delivered.

Day 25 - 01/17/2017: Sent email to support regards to application.

Day 26 - 01/18/2017: N-400 rejected because incorrect payment amount.

Day 32 - 01/24/2017: N-400 + I-942 resent.

Day 34 - 01/26/2017: N-400 application marked delivered.

Day 49 - 02/10/2017: N-400 rejected again because incorrect payment amount.

Day 52 - 02/13/2017: Email form USCIS support responded package was rejected in error (!?) for the first and second time submissions, they requested 3rd resubmission + tracking number in order to apply my earliest priority date. 

Day 52 - 02/13/2017: N-400 + I-942 resent on the same day, also sent a response to Lockbox to provide information to USCIS.

Day 54 (Day 0) - 02/15/2017: N-400 application marked delivered.

Day 62 (Day 8) - 02/23/2017: E-notification, E-mail from USCIS, E-mail from Support announced Resubmission was accepted.

Day 66 (Day 12)- 02/27/2017: Notice of Acceptance as Fees Waiver Approval received. (All fees were waived instead of reduced by half as supposed by filing form I-942)

Day 69 (Day 15) - 03/02/2017: Online Status Update: Fingerprint Appointment was scheduled. 

Day 70  (Day 16) - 03/03/2017: Fingerprint Appointment Letter received. Biometric will be on 3/15/17. 

Day 70  (Day 16) - 03/03/2017: Early Walked-In for Biometric at 3:45 PM.

Day 87 (Day 33) - 03/20/2017: Online Status Update: Case was placed in line for interview. 

Day 234 (Day 180) - 08/14/2017: Online Status Update: Interview has been scheduled.

Day 239 (Day 185) - 08/19/2017: Interview Letter received.

Day 269 (Day 215) - 09/18/2017: Interview 2:30 PM at USCIS SF Field Office. Recommended For Approval. 

Day 280 (Day 226) - 09/29/2017: Oath Ceremony Letter received. N400 is approved.

I fully agree with you. But by this token you should never feel disappointed by anything if you compare your fate in USA to that of people in Syria. But hey, people experience calamities in various regions of the world and we still feel disappointed by our small things...

 

The disappointment is justified in a sense if I gauge it against experience of other people in the same field office. And really, it is only a tiny grain of disappointment, not a big thing. There is more relief and happiness in the overall outcome.

Passport is a great thing if you travel and most of us, immigrants, need a passport since we still have strong ties to our countries of origin. I think an oath ceremony is the real finish line here, because only a grand jury can revoke your citizenship after they give you your naturalization certificate. Until then, USCIS can still change their mind... Fingers crossed they won't. :)

I have completed my interview today and I was recommended for approval. In  fact, I have received an oath letter for October 27th, the letter was given 20 minutes after my interview. Since my wife did not accept the first oath date she has been offered, I did not want to go down the same path and wait for a letter from NBC. The fact that the first available date was in 2 weeks was convenient too, since there is enough time to give advance notice at work.

 

Short summary of my conversation with the immigration officer: after swearing that I will tell the truth we went quickly through reading and writing, followed by 6 civic questions. After that we went through N-400, the IO was curious whether I had any traffic tickets (I had one warning, but he was not interested). He also wanted to make sure I did not serve in Polish military forces. I did not, since I was excluded based on poor vision (well, just strong myopia, I see well in glasses). The oath date which is 2 weeks ahead was a small disappointment, since Raleigh makes oath ceremonies once every week, but all in all I was happy that I did not have to wait for approval, instead I was approved on the spot.

 

My impression is  that both my case and my wife's case went through more comprehensive background check and that's why the interview was pretty much only civic questions and not much of anything else. Also, what surprised me is that IO had very thin file of papers related to my case. Many people report seeing an inch-thick pile of documents on IO's desk.

Are you going abroad? The time right after oath is the worst possible for travel, since you loose your green card but you do not get any travel document immediately. Maybe NYC is easier since you have passport agency on-site.

He can go with travel document and naturalization certificate. Once you have a ticket in hand you should be able to qualify for expedited service.

Received notice that oath ceremony was mailed. Does anyone know whether a L2 officer would be able to tell me the oath date? Just need to figure out if my travel plans are still feasible...
