They are not as far behind as stated. My mother in law filed end of august last year 2016 here in Atlanta and received her citizenship last month may 2017

Well, the thing is that if someone is going to get stuck in background checks, or in things like this infamous CARRP, then average processing times do not really matter. I can understand why some people are behind, but what really puzzles me is that why some people are so much ahead of others.

Here is a short report about Raleigh Field Office N-400 applications:

Year   Quarter Received Approved Denied Pending
2017     qtr2     2403     1694    124    4533
2017     qtr1     1860      967     54    4047
2016     qtr4     1755     1464     78    3152
2016     qtr3     2009     1557     82    2903
2016     qtr2     1915     1422     77    2496
2016     qtr1     1403     1259     69    2045
2015     qtr4     1490     1580     82    1781
2015     qtr3     1514     1419     49    2101
2015     qtr2     1483     1368     58    2065
2015     qtr1     1271     1038     70    2037

Interesting facts are

  1. In the last quarter of 2016 only 967 cases were approved, much less than before and after that
  2. In the first quarter of 2017 many more cases were received than usual (Trump executive orders scare?)
  3. Raleigh has accumulated a backlog which is much larger than usual. It seems they will have average processing time of at least 9 months now, based on accumulated backlog and their rate of processing.

BTW, the data above was extracted by automated processing of csv files from https://www.uscis.gov/tools/reports-studies/immigration-forms-data/data-set-form-n-400-application-naturalization . This is the reason why the rows are mislabeled, there is shift one quarter ahead. This is how USCIS named their csv files. So, the newest data point is actually 1st quarter of 2017.

Hi All,

I had a infopass appointment today at Mount Laurel uscis office NJ, the lady that we spoke to was very helpful & had a look into my case & said that there was nothing wrong my application & that I am at this moment inline for an interview appointment, even though my online status is still showing that my biometrics appointment has been booked.

She did also say that it can take up to 6 to 8 months to complete the naturalization process at this time, as there is still a backlog of applications.

Interesting, I'm guessing either USCIS is "pushing" the 6 to 8 month dates just like their website and the USCIS call center. Like I mentioned before, I applied on mid March, did the fingerprints on early April and the status hasn't changed since. I estimate to get an interview in or around December and get an oath ceremony by March next year.

But your tracker entry says you've got the "in line for interview" notification on 05/01/17?

I think your estimate is very pessimistic. You could try extracting data for your field office the way I did a few posts earlier for Raleigh to get a more reliable estimate. You might find that the first quarter of 2017 have seen a substantial surge in N-400 applications (it is true for Raleigh), as many people realized that a green card is not safe and one could be stranded outside of the country at any time. In fact, it was always like that, GC is just a visa and letting a GC holder in at the border is to some extent a discretionary decision of a CBP agent. But even with this 1st quarter surge, 1-year average does not seem likely. Certainly it will be longer than usual.

OK, as I wrote this, I became curious myself, so here is data for the total of USCIS applications in the last 10 quarters:

Year Quarter Received Approved Denied Pending
2017 1 286692 165907 17514 740119
2016 4 238062 111155 18530 632937
2016 3 244134 226745 25943 518707
2016 2 283234 186864 20806 520283
2016 1 249730 175428 19564 442219
2015 4 185466 155129 19051 384850
2015 3 202128 210557 22042 363270
2015 2 214231 189939 19214 395285
2015 1 195097 171836 17762 384043
2014 4 161833 150832 16099 377349

I do not see the situation is as bad nationwide as it is in Raleigh, where 1st quarter of 2017 have seen a surge in the number of received applications. It is interesting to see that the number of approved applications in the last quarter of 2016 is also significantly lower compared to other quarters, exactly as it is in Raleigh.

You are right, I forgot to mention that.

There is one February filer from the same city who has not even gotten in line for interview, they did their fingerprints on 3/15/17. Besides, the San Antonio field office serves both Austin and San Antonio. That alone can add months to anyone's timeline.

You make a great point about the GC's, I agree with you 100% on that.
