Foreign Earned Income and home in France

I am preparing to file our 2016 taxes and I'm not quite sure about filing form 2555. My husband arrived on K1 in May 2016 so this is our first year to file a joint tax return as a married couple. After reading the instructions and the form 2555 I am more confused than ever about our situation. My husband has foreign earned income for the first three months of 2016 but zero income after arriving here since we just received his EAD in Feb. We live in the US but we also maintain a home in France and have associated expenses like taxes, insurance and utilities. I'm not quite sure how to report this on form 2555. Also my income was low for 2016 so we qualify for the standard deduction not the itemized deductions and we do not have tax liability in US and we will be receiving a refund of everything that was withheld for the year. I'm not quite sure if we need to file form 2555 since his income will not change the bottom line and I don't know if any of the expenses related to the house in France is deductible. Is there anyone who has had a similar situation or has knowledge who can advise me? Sorry this was so long.
