Can't say I'm surprised. There was no way he was going to sit there and let them "roast" him, as is typical. He is too thin-skinned for that.

Granted I realize there were already problems before he pulled out, and the whole dinner in general has become sort of a "celebrity event", and not really for the correspondents anymore.

I wonder if Alec Baldwin going in his place (Not yet confirmed) would actually improve viewer numbers compared to the real President.

He would be out of his element, surrounded by intelligent people. I was also wondering if they will invite Alec in his place.

It is being suggested, and it would certainly be "popular" in a way that it never was before.

If they go that route though, there is really no "going back". Not that Trump is more likely to accept an invitation next year compared to this year, but still. It will be the end of a real "White House's Correspondents Dinner" with a Presidential attendance. Though I guess it's the end anyway until Trump leaves office or silences his "enemies", whichever comes first.

It will be the end for the time the so-called president is in office. I think the country wins, because he doesn't need another platform for his anti-American rhetoric.

I haven't watched in the past, does the President make a speech at it? I know traditionally some comedian does some light "roasting", but not sure about any other details.

Will definitely watch if Alec Baldwin goes in his place though.

There is a little bit of roasting from the audience and from the president as well. It's a tongue-in-cheek kind of humor. Most presidents rise to the occasion, because it is part of the tradition. Obama always did well, because of his ability to connect with the crowd. W was good at it too. He had good timing and knew how to deliver his lines. I dont think the country will miss much without Trump's sour face and murky Debbie-downer.

The most powerful man in the world is also its most sensitive and delicate snowflake. What a transparent bully, blowhard Trump is. Agreed the dinner will be better off without him even though hosting the President is the reason for the dinner. Factoid, last President to miss the dinner was Ronald Reagan and he only missed it because he was recovering from getting shot. Trump is no alpha.

I've been trying to figure out who was the last person to attend it BEFORE Reagan. Just curious when the last time someone has backed out without an actual reason (Like Reagan having been shot). It was cancelled in 1951 by Truman. Not sure about attendance between then and the 80's.

Reagan was another president who did not attend one year.  Some lame excuse about recovery from a bullet wound.

Well they are both wounded. Just one in a more literal sense.

He does not know how to take a joke and he definitely does not know how to make one. He just IS the joke.
All he knows is how to scowl with a his squinty little eyes and act like a grumpy old man spewing 'get off my land' ramblings.

A real alpha would have attended with his wounds still bleeding red hot American blood.
