Lining up the Ducks- Safeguarding success in application for a B-2 visa

Dear Members:

Given it all seems a gamble, I would love your collective sage advice re: how to best safeguard success in obtaining a B-2 visitor's visa.  The context here is that I am a U.S. citizen, male, retired, and living in Indonesia. My wife is applying for a B-2 visa. Please comment on my own list and let me know if I err or you would add something to it.  Specifically, I am outlining the approach and preparation for the consular interview.  (It is interesting to note that the U.S. Embassy Consular Office does not specify documents that an applicant should bring in support of their own application).

1. Applicant should demonstrate they have their own means of financial self-support, has a job, or owns a company, and doesn't rely on such support from their U.S. citizen-spouse.

2.  If an employee: Applicant best show the Consular Officers they work for a company in their own country and produce a letter from that company stating their employee is due back on such-a-such a date.

3. Applicant should prove they have their own bank account and give evidence of the current balance.

4.  Applicant should declare in D-160 application that they, themselves- and not their U.S. spouse- will be paying for their own travel expenses.

5. Applicant should bring to the interview a family card and proof that they own a house and land in Indonesia (their name as entitled on a land certificate).

6. Applicant should bring a copy of ownership papers proving they are the owner of a motor vehicle.

Any amendments, corrections, or additions are humbly requested!  We failed the first time at this, and are trying to pick up the pieces.  The CO told my Indonesian wife that as the U.S. spouse, I best apply for a green card, but that seems inappropriate as we don't live in the U.S. currently and have no future plans to move there.

Thanks in advance!
