Hi all, we have somehow misplaced my husband's SS card   He is a permanent resident (10 year green card). Also, his SS card said something like "only valid for work" on it. We would like to get that removed and also get a replacement card. Has anyone been through this process?

Since you have the 10 year green card, you should be able to get a normal SSN card. Head to your nearest Social Security Administration office and file for a lost card. Additionally, bring documentation (the green card) showing that the message on the card should be removed.

There's a limit to how many cards you can get replaced per year, and per life time. I forget the limits, but I think it's 3 per year, 10 per life time.

Yes, those are the limits. But even if you manage to lose your card 10 times, you're not entirely out of luck. A hardship exception exists, if you can provide proof of needing the card to get a job or access state benefits:

RM 10205.425 Exception to SSN Card Limits Due to Hardship

When a number holder (NH) reaches his or her yearly or lifetime SSN card limits, an SSN replacement card may still be issued if failure to receive an SSN card will cause a hardship.

To receive an exception due to hardship, the NH must present a letter from a third-party provider, such as a State public assistance agency or an employer, indicating that the NH must present his or her SSN card to receive employment or a benefit.

NOTE: If the individual needs verification of his or her SSN, but cannot present a letter from a third party, an acceptable exception is not met. SSNAP denies the replacement SSN card application and prints the appropriate notice. For instructions, see the SSNAP User Guide.
