Can you post the exact email that the school sent you regarding this? I am curious as to their phrasing. However, the advice you have been given is sound. I too was worried about your working on an F1, but as long as you have your EAD, then I see no issues. The AOS will not be a problem either.

As far as taking a break and doing your MBA later, that will be contingent upon the school a) approving a leave of absence for you IF you already enrolled or b) accepting you back in because if you you are not already enrolled you will usually have to apply again.

paper trail. ask them if you can record the conversation and if everything they have to say is legal I can't think of a good reason for them to refuse since it is your academic information you are discussing.

It sounds like to me the school was a bit overzealous.  Nothing to go to the media about.  Although I sympathize with the OP, hyperbole is what I would call the title of this thread.  Probably more miscommunication than anything else.  Doesn't sound like a news story to me.

You are not legally required to go to the school and they have no business asking that if you are not one of their students.

OK people, calm down - especially those of you who have never been in F1/student status before and have no idea what the regulations are.

 

The International Office has all the right in the world to know why you're not following the rules of your student status - after all, they'll get in trouble too if they enroll students who are not following the rules (F1: taking a full-time load of classes). All students on F1 and J1 status are entered in the SEVIS database, and they're required to update it with accurate information. That's why they need to know when there's a change in your immigration status or plans for study or address or workplace when you're on OPT.

 

The reason they ask you to come to their office immediately is that they see a problem with your F1 status that needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

 

You may have encountered someone who wasn't entirely informed about AOS procedures. Or you may not have communicated your change of marital status, address, immigration status, or all of your steps to do AOS.

 

Clear up the misunderstanding, and live your life as you see fit. They can't harm your immigration status, and they'll terminate your SEVIS record - end of story.

I highly doubt that the school actually said those exact words to the OP "you cannot marry without our permission". I imagine that instead they expressed concern regarding the OP's F1 status and what the next steps need to be for the school. Furthermore - the OP said they would be taking a break. It's been years since I worked in my university's international office, so maybe the rules have changed, but breaks are dealt with vary carefully.  If someone on an F1 takes a leave of absence THEY CANNOT REMAIN IN THE US FORT THAT TIME PERIOD. The OP claims that they are doing just that. The school probably doesn't understand that now that they are AOS, the rules have changed. It is the OP's responsibility to clarify this information with them. Which, can be done over the phone and by mail. I imagine that when they asked the OP to "come in" they didn't assume the OP was in another state. Because on an F1 visa - they shouldn't be! The school is worried about fraudulent activity, and rightly so.  I am betting that they scared the OP but not by saying "we will cancel your AOS". I am sure the words were different - the OP jus heard their greatest fear instead. (Which happens when we are upset and worried.)

I think the OP has gotten all the answers and the information they need to solve their problem there is no need to discredit the OP's story by continuing to speculate about what might and might not have been said.

I don't intend to discredit, merely to clarify that sometimes things can be misunderstood. Until my recent post, I don't think they did get all the answers as no one had yet advised that F1 students are not allowed to take a break from school and remain in the country. This adds an important piece to the puzzle and hopefully helps the OP understand what the school may have been trying to convey.

I finished school. I was about to begin my MBA but I decided to get married and go to school part-time
