The need of a lawyer in the finance process

I am currently at the start of the visa process e.g finding informtion and forms and I was wondering do many people use a lawyer to help their finance visa process. I have read the benefit being that they add credability to you being a couple and obviously keep track of your affairs. But in general are they more advantageous to have or not in the application process?

Thanks

No one here can tell you to get a lawyer or not. That is something that you have to decide for yourself and there are advantages and disadvantages of both.

I used a lawyer because I was to busy to worry about how to properly file documents and didn't care to much about learning the process. I just wanted everything done right so there were no delays in getting my fiancee over to the US.

I have also heard horror stories of what attorney's have done causing more headaches than help. If you decide to go the attorney route, choose wisely.

No you dont NEED a lawyer unless your case is not "usual". This process isnt excessively difficult if you have the time to learn about it. Most of us here dont get them, we are a "do it yourself" site. You are from the Uk, and they aren't especially suspicious of us, nor has anyone here mentioned (that I've seen) that lawyers add much credibility. They can't speed things up, and can hinder the process if they dont know what they are doing. If you do go with a lawyer, make sure to stay on top of the process anyways

We didn't use a lawyer and had no problems (and saved a lot of money!) However I am very organized, and had the time to make sure I did everything right. So I guess it depends what you think you can handle!

You don't need a lawyer to show credibility, just shows you paid a guy.

Solid evidence of relationship is all that is needed for that.

But as for a lawyer goes, aslong as theres nothing complicated about you guys, and you read and learn (this website has alot of informatin on it), then you can save yourself the money and save it for when your fiance is here and you do AOS :P

I knew I should've become a lawyer. All I need is 12 clients to live for a year.

You probably wouldn't be very good at it...you have a soul! :innocent:

As far as a "finance visa", doesn't that occur with the I-134? :P

Wasn't gonna say it... well actually, I was, but then I deleted before posting, and tried sooo hard to sit on my hands.

But when I see people going on about their 'finance'... I'm not trying to be the spelling police here, I swear, but if there's ONE typo you want to avoid round here... pleeeeease, people, get 'fiance'/'fiancee' right when you type it!!!

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png

Oh yeah, because there are dumb people like me who don't even realize it's a typo! I thought the post was maybe referring to the affidavit of support.

Hi there,

In our case, we didn't attain an attorney at all. Before finding this useful websites, my fiance planned to hire one to take care paperworks for us cos he thought process would be difficult and demand a lot of time. Since i found the site, he gave up hiring laywer because i collected a full list of instruction on how to prepare and file paperworks, i also received so many helpful advices from VJ members. They are so kind and ready to help you when you face problem in filling your paperwork.

So i think you don't need to hire laywer and i believe you can do it by yourself as long as you follow exactly what the instruction is written on Guides item.

Wish you luck.

I paid $2000 to Holmes and Lolly. For that, they put in maybe 3-4 hours of work.

After my wife arrived, the Adjustment of Status journey turned into a surrealistic nightmare. And H&L did absolutely NOTHING.

The visa is the easy part... The AOS is where you have to be seriously on top of things. And the visa-lawyers aren't interested in this... Only your money.

I am an attorney who plans to go into immigration law. I found your post interesting. I have been getting ready for the AOS process and looking into case law in case I have to go into immigration court. The service you received seemed to be much more in line with what I would believe a cost range between $500-$750 which is the range I plan to charge going through the AOS process. If I have to appear in imigration court that would be more. I would be interested in what services you received.
