SSN/AOS/EAD/AP Process in Florida

Hello everyone! We are a K1 filer and we already got approved last January 25. I will be flying to the US this coming Saturday, February 25. I just have a few questions regarding SSN, AOS, EAD and AP as well as any feedback anyone who went thru Fort Lauderdale as their POE can provide.

 

1. Some people say it would be better if we apply for my SSN first, followed by marriage, then AOS+EAD+AP. Others say it has to be marriage first then SSN then AOS+EAD+AP. For those who are from Florida (specifically Jacksonville), may I know which one should be done first?

 

2. In Jacksonville, FL, how many days will it take for the marriage license to come out after we file for it? We want to get married ASAP but I arrive there on a Saturday so all government offices are closed until Monday. So we can only file for it on  Feb 27 (Monday). I have read in other forums that it varies from state to state.

 

3. Do I require an SSN to be able to apply for the marriage license? Or can it be done at the same time?

 

4. For those who went thru Fort Lauderdale as their POE, can I please ask for any feedback or reviews you may have?

On VJ it's advised to do it the first way, start with SSN. This is because many VJer's run into problems when trying to apply after marriage, being wrongfully told they are no longer eligible. This is wrong but it happens frequently. This depends on the staff at the SSO not on the state you're in. You can go back and change the name on the card once your EAD comes in. SOmetimes you can get it changed with the marriage certificate, but again frequently ppl are denied this, with the EAD you can for sure.

Thank you for the answer. ? Appreciate it. Will it take long to apply for the SSN? I mean is it just processed within the same day we applied for it? I am so sorry that my question is branching out to more questions, I wanna make sure I get answers and that I get the right answers because we are doing it ourselves and we don't want any confusion with the process or something. That depends on how fast you are verified against immigration. It can be instant and it can take over a month. NOwadays for most ppl it's instant or within 3-5 business days. It can take longer if there is an issue of some sort, but you won't know this until you apply. That's another reason for going right away to apply for it. For me it took 8 weeks... but my first name is 3 names and it was too long to fit in the box in their software program (SAVE) where they verify your status, so it had to be sent of by mail to a USCIS office. This doesn't happen too often, but it does. So on the Monday I would take your printed i-94 (that you can print of the i-94 webpage), your passport and go to your local office and apply. You will be asked to fill out this form. So you can fill it out in advance and bring it if you want.

 

If you are verified right away you will have it in your mail within 2 weeks.

Oh, and make sure to put your name in the mailbox. Sometimes cards are sent back if it's not on there.

Here's a link where you can click on further to find out what documents you will need for the marriage license in your county. Most states you don't need an SSN. It does say SSN on there, I would contact the county clerk and have a chat with them and see what they say. Most of the times they have different rules for non-citizens. Your passport should be enough

Well I think that's why we are here  I got so many helpful tips from ppl here and if can avoid a sad incident and extra work for any of the members on here that's great! Some ppl don't come on here until it's too late unfortunately. You are staying ahead of the game and that's great, you'll need to keep that up for a long time to come hahaha. Next advice is to get the AOS sent off as soon as possible... cause it sucks sitting waiting! But also... don't forget to enjoy being together and getting married! It's a big life changing step moving to another country and getting hitched. Wish you the best

Oh good Lord, we need those kind words right now! Thank you!  We want to be ahead of the game as we want to be prepared as much as possible. I only had the time to post right now because I just resigned from work and now I have all the time in the world before the flight to gather as much info as I can regarding the whole process. We plan to send the AOS ASAP as soon as we are married because we want to make sure I get the EAD sooner rather than later.  And you have a very nice attitude! I try to help too as much as I can whenever there are those K1 filers who are new to the process especially those who filed for it here in UAE. And we haven't seen each other for a year and 4 months now soooo we are sooo excited to finally close the distance!
